Touhou Nekokayou: Scarlet Weather Archive in Japanese Red #122

First Previous Random Next Latest

Characters: Rika, Rikako Asakura, Nitori Kawashiro, Yumemi Okazaki, Chiyuri Kitashirakawa, Yukari Yakumo

The idea was: how do I get all Touhou's "SCIENCE!" characters together? And this is basically what I came up with; not that they actually end up in the same room together (also, hooray for Outside World realistic-hair-color shenanigans!)1 ...

So, this is the first time I used Rikako. She was apparently excommunicated as a heretic by Reimu. I guess that explains why she's apparently living out in the woods? I dunno. This was just the Spaceship 1 background with a forest background in the window.

Sometimes I'm struck by really weird things about create.swf for totally random reasons, such as the fact that it uses no shading — the characters are all just made up of flat colors with no shadowiness. I dunno, I thought it was odd. (Hooray for artstyle-shenanigans?)

  1. (Rika, Rikako, and Nitori are sitting in a bizzare technological room with odd-looking but generically high-tech machines in the background. Trees and bushes are visible through a window.)
Nitori: Rikako, I don't think I've mentioned this before, but your decor is completely ridiculous and I wish I'd thought of it first!
Rikako: Hah! I'll just *bet* you do.
  2. Rikako: Anyway, "Project: Doused Firewall" is progressing very well, thanks to our recent breakthroughs! Congrats, girls!
Rika: Aw, man, we'll have Yukari's barrier down and get access to the Outside World's internet in no time!
  3. Rikako: Nitori, you said you made a flux-crystal we could use, yes?
Nitori: (getting out a crystal) Yeah, I stumbled on it while I was haxing one of the SDM's radio-crystals!
  4. (Rikako takes the crystal with a grandiose gesture.)
Rikako: Then what are we waiting for!? Let's get this thing installed!
  5. (Closeup of a static-filled screen; the crystal is hooked up to a device next to it. This is accompanied by off-panel commentary from the scientists.)
Rikako: Okay ... I think I've hacked into some kind of high-tech intranet ... We'll be seeing the Outside World in just a moment!
  6. (Chiyuri (in a labcoat and with black hair) and Yumemi (with dark-brown hair) appear on the monitor.)
Chiyuri: -- Makai. How's *that* for a story for your grandkids?
Yumemi: Hah! C'mon, Chiyuri, what makes you think we'll *have* any?
    Rikako: Huh? *these* two?
Rika: What? Wait, didn't they come to Gensokyo years ago?
  7. (Yumemi approaches whatever camera they're using.)
Yumemi: Wait ... what's that on the monitor over there?
    Chiyuri: Wait, what?
Nitori: They only stopped last year, actu-- uh-oh.
  8. (The crystal explodes, and the view fizzles out.)
    SFX: THOP!
  9. (Yukari appears on the screen, which now has a gapspace-background. Nitori, Rika, and Rikako react with varying fear/horror.)
    Yukari: (darkly cheerful) Mmmmmmmnope.
    Nitori, Rikako, Rika: .....!

1And before anyone says anything: they are realistic Japanese hair-colors, so shaddap.

All Touhou characters are © Team Shanghai Alice and/or ZUN; create.swf is ⑨ KirbyM with help from Thefre. "Sakura petals" brush in main/4koma logo was made by Kisara Girl. "Falling leaves" brush in 60-Years logo came with Photoshop.

The Watcher

Okay, I'm really not understanding why Yukari can't simply regulate WHERE Gensokyo's internet can access two-way. It's better than dealing with the science brigade forcing her to constantly invent new blockades.

/ Modified by Dizzy H. Muffin:

I love it how Chiyuri and Yumemi have realistic-hair-color, Even thoer Blond and Redhead are realistic. [MUFFINEDIT: f'ing auto-tag-closers, how do they work]

Oh wait, Sorry, Didn't read the Footnote. ^^; My Bad.

Ok, so they hack into an outside world network... which just happens to be the one on the "probability space hypervessel". (What the odds? Ooh... right.)

And then they bring up a security camera(?) from that (wtf, no closed-circuit security system? Yumemi must have skipped Systems Security 101 when she was getting her Masters). Then Yumemi notices "something" on their monitor... but then an unusually speedy and motivated Yukari cuts the feed. Conveeeenient timing.

I'm a little confused.

Oh, but you did reference Bill Nye, so all is forgiven.

you know, I honestly don't think that a firewall in Yukari's system would be hardly the best firewall out there, perhaps she should invest more in some outside help to really beef it up.

oh, wait, I forgot Ran's a cryptographer. nevermind, forget what I said.

@sRc: And apparently Yukari is even better at math than Ran.

I get the feeling that Yukari knew what they were doing all along and just waited until the most annoying moment to cut the feed.

Dizzy H. Muffin

They're using magic to access the Outside World, as evidenced by the fact that they are using Some Kinda Crystal. Therefore all apparent inconsistencies are explained. ;3

@Bocaj: yah, she is, but Yukari's also lazy. why would she do it herself when she could make Ran do it? :P

Silly Science Team. Yukari already has internet, and is even monopolizing Gensokyo's sole ISP. That's what Ran is good for, after all.

For the lulz, obviously.

It's like one big PC-98 reunion! You know, I've always wondered if Rika and Rikako were related somehow...

RKS Blitzer

Something about Yukari strikes a nerve...

Rereading this comic, I'm entirely curious about the anecdote Chiyuri was telling.

Thank you, Bill Nye.

>.> Am I the only one that thought there was a resonance cascade imminent when Nitori said she just *found* that crystal?
Hmmm... Actually... crossing Touhou and Halflife... I wonder if Yukari has cake...

Dizzy H. Muffin

Actually I was supposed to indicate that she made it from the radio crystal, orz. |3

XD stumbling on while haxing does not a creation make...
Now, if we were to interpret the crystal as some deep magic workaround type thingy, then, okay, stumbling on while haxing does work...

Oh, and... What does the SDM use radio for? The throngs of useless fairy-"maids"?

Hunter 1

TheBlueJelly: Yes, actually. See comic... 108.

Aren't Chiyuri and Yumemi actually not from the outside world, but are from a parallel universe?
