Touhou Nekokayou: Scarlet Weather Archive in Japanese Red #68

First Previous Random Next Latest

Characters: Flandre Scarlet, Koishi Komeiji, Cirno

I have completely revamped the code for the image-generator for the purposes of setting up a new file-schema,1 which will ideally go entirely unnoticed except by people linking directly to the comic-images. And me, since it's now slightly less convenient owing to no longer being part of the CMS (I seriously need to integrate a file-uploader of some kind). Going through and doing this with all 68 comics will take some time. The really fun bits will be the comics with random elements ...

With Koishi's hat and hairstyle, her expression in panel 2 manages to come off as sort of forlorn with eye #2. Interesting effect there.

The reason why nobody moves much in this comic (I'm at around panel 3) is because I need to keep track of each character, their ears, and their tail. Flipping them is bad enough ... I don't even want to think about rotating them ... Though frankly it would make a whole lot more sense if I stopped worrying and just eyeballed the necessary changes.

(*makes Flandre in panel 4 by just eyeballing*) Yep, that's the better way of doing it!

For some reason, at first Cirno's new character-design makes me ... I dunno, somehow reluctant to depict her as a total nineball. I honestly wasn't sure what lines to give her up until panel 5 or so. Speaking of which, the "Incident = fighting = strength = me!" line is based on dialogue of "NoName" in Acceleration of Suguri X Edition, by the way.2 She's not going to obsess about knees, though.

One problem with the new Cirno is that her wings are barely visible against some backgrounds. Oh well.

In the last two panels, Koishi is talking about Cirno's fight with Yuka Kazami in Phantasmagoria of Flower View. Cirno wins, of course, since she's the player character, but she still runs off in terror.

Transcript

  1. Narration box: In some woods.
(Flandre and Koishi (both with cat-ears) are in some woods; Flandre has lowered her parasol. Koishi's Third Eye is closed.)
    Koishi: Um ... uh-oh.
Flandre: ... Did we get lost?
  2. (Cirno suddenly flies up behind them.)
    Koishi: I think so ...
Cirno: Why are you people cats!?
    Flandre: Huh?
  3. Koishi: (turning to Cirno and opening her Third Eye) Huh? Oh, you're that ice fairy ... We don't know ourselves, we were actually trying to go find that out.
    SFX: peek
Flandre: I don't suppose you'd know anything about this Incident?
Cirno: (looking a bit silly as she tries to think) Umm, nope!
  4. (Koishi closes her Third Eye, and Flandre raises her parasol, preparing to take off.)
Koishi: Okay, right. Flan, I think it's just about time we gave up and flew straight up to head off somewhere else.
    Flandre: Right-oh!
Cirno: (looking even sillier as she tries to think) Hmmm ...
  5. (Closeup of Cirno against a background of ⑨s.)
Cirno: (thought cloud) Wait a minute ... she said it was an "Incident" ... Incident = fighting = strength = me! I MUST GO FORTH!
  6. (Koishi and Flandre float above the treeline, Flandre holding up her parasol. Cirno flies up behind them.)
    Koishi: Let's see ... we're near ...
    Flandre: Wah?
Cirno: I SHALL HELP YOU GUYS!
  7. Koishi: (opening her Third Eye) Um, why?
    SFX: peek again
Cirno: BECAUSE I AM THE STRONGEST!
  8. Flandre: The strongest what, exactly?
    Cirno: Huh?
    Koishi caption: EX-Boss
    Flandre caption: EX-Boss
Cirno caption: Stage 2 boss (and also stage 1 midboss)
  9. Cirno: Nobody has asked me that before! You are worthy companions!
Koishi: Okay, but don't blame us if this turns out like your fight with the sunflower-youkai.
  10. (Cirno flinches away.)
    Cirno SFX: shiver
    Flandre: Hm? What happened?
Koishi: Oh, just something I saw in her memories that really scared her.

1You'll notice if you View Source that the image URL of a several of comics are now things like "thcomic/61.php" instead of "thcomic/img.php?c=61&m=13&py1=325&py2=300&py4=333&py5=300&py6=300&py7=300&py8=290&py10=350&pt2=7&pt4=15&pt5=20&pt7=10&pt8=20&pt13=20."

2I've been playing it a lot more than Touhou lately. Partly because I'm too lazy to reinstall the Touhou games, but mostly because I can basically ace easy-mode by button-mashing, for the most part ...

All Touhou characters are © Team Shanghai Alice and/or ZUN; create.swf is ⑨ KirbyM with help from Thefre. "Sakura petals" brush in main/4koma logo was made by Kisara Girl. "Falling leaves" brush in 60-Years logo came with Photoshop.

Aw, poor Cirno! Traumatized by the fight with her greatest adversary.... I think someone needs a great big hug~

Also, that Suguri game looks interestingly fun, which warrants them getting my money. It also looks tons easier than Bunny Must Die.

Dizzy H. Slightly Voided

Acceleration of Suguri is, yeah. The original is straight-up Nintendo-Hard danmaku ...

Morgan

That seems to be what a normal person does after fighting Yuka. `.`

Cirno gets to help resolve an incident! *.*

Dan-Heron

hmm, from previous comic, does Cirno running away counts as the first in their run through stronger oponents until finding the culprit? Or that goes to Reimu blasting Marisa?
Panels 7-9 are just good. Everybody so focused in making Cirno scream her famous line, nobody goes beyond it.

what exactly happened in their fight? If something managed to scare Cirno, it must be pretty bad

Morgan

Cirno only ran towards people in this comic, didn't she? `.`

Dizzy H. Slightly Voided

Cirno isn't running, she's just flinching. As for what happened in the Cirno vs Yuka fight, I'd say part of it is when Yuka says this:

You know that we use the saying, "make a beehive out of someone",
when we want to mean "completely screw someone up".
But a beehive has bees, and bees might attack in defense.
That's why I'd like to say,
"make a sunflower out of someone".
A sunflower with all those seeds packed does look quite like a beehive,
and you've got many shells shoved in too.

So, more or less just Yuka being Yuka ...

Morgan

I don't think I could be scared by that, because I have no idea what any of it's supposed to mean. o.O

Dizzy H. Slightly Voided

It means yer gettin' taken to the f*BEEP*ing cleaners, mate.

While you're revamping your code for the purpose of url beautification, you may want to consider learning about mod rewrite.

Dizzy H. Slightly Voided

Dun got direct access to the Apache-stuff. :<

Code needed revamping, anyway ...

Duran

That isn't surprising, Yuka's one of the few characters able to match Yukari, Flan and Suika, especially just by the sheer firepower. (I think only Flan can match the sheer firepower of Yuka)

Though Cirno's stupidity is often inflated in fanon (like Meiling's competency at her job; she's good at it, but not much you can do about a Master Spark in the face.), though I like to think of her habit of taking on much stronger folks to be a sign of her boundless confidence.

Morgan

"It means yer gettin' taken to the f*BEEP*ing cleaners, mate."

I think beating Yuka and leaving would be a lot less difficult than figuring out how that dialogue leads to that meaning. `.`

Also, I'm a lot less restrained than SomethingUnreal.

(Does it count as fanart if it's also made with create.swf? `.` Also, I've gained a great deal of respect for the effort put into making this comic after how long it took me to get this the way I wanted it... and even then I cut corners.)

You don't necessarily need direct access to Apache stuff. If you can upload a .htaccess file, you can likely use mod rewrite. It's one of the most common Apache extentions there is, and I really doubt that Dreamhost wouldn't have it standard.

I checked the phpinfo(), and it totally doesn't. I'll pester the host, though ...

And none of that in public, plz. :P

EDIT: Oh. Whaddaya know, it had it anyway.

Anonymous Hacker

Good to hear. I'm not happy with the fact that you edited my post, but I understand why you would want to. :P

I'd much prefer a nice [REDACTED] over just removing the comment.

Dizzy H. Slightly Voided

Hmm, true, I see your point, sorry.

@Morgan: Argh, and here I was expecting some cat-eared vampire loli of the not-so-mentally-unstable variety. Also, me not wanting to load Create.SWF was completely due to laziness, not restraint. =P

Morgan

I mostly wanted to see Aya and Shanghai with cat ears... and then the whole thing got out of hand. `.`

Close enough. :P

Facteur Rien

So, finally, you didn't keep my hard-worked translation...
*cry*
Such effort ("Done in 2 min. Too easy"), ages of preparation ("uh? Transcribe? what is it?"), and hard-worked efforts ("youkai? How can I translate this?").

And, btw, what form of english are you using? I mean, do you use english, or american?

Dizzy H. Slightly Voided

I use American english. And there is no form of English in which "police" refers to text in any way. Look it up in a freaking dictionary if you aren't sure what it means. :V

(And for translating things like "youkai", do what I do: nothing, just leave it in Japanese.)

Facteur Rien

I knew about the "police" stuff, but I was too lazy to open a dictionary.
