Characters: Marisa Kirisame, Kisume, Reimu Hakurei, Alice Margatroid, Shanghai, Nitori Kawashiro, Utsuho Reiuji, Satori Komeiji

This took longer than I expected because I hadn't known I was going to give Kisume as much screen time as I did (including the flashback to SA stage 1). Apart from anything else, I'd originally planned on starting with the conversation between Alice and Nitori, which begins on what is now panel 10.

The Nitori-AI's babble in panel 12 is a direct quote from Metal Gear Solid 2. No, it doesn't make sense in context either, but there is an explanation eventually.

Yeah, I know, the penultimate panel was a ridiculously obvious and telegraphed joke. (It's a fake game-over in MGS2, as well.)

KirbyM created a Subterranean Animism version of Marisa relatively recently, so as of 12 March 2009, I updated the flashbacks with the new character design.

Transcript

  1. (Marisa sneaks through the Underground.)
    SFX: sneak sneak
  2. (Kisume suddenly descends from above, a bright red exclamation mark above her head.)
    Kisume: A HUMAN!
    ! SFX: vweet
    Marisa: GAH!
  3. Marisa: (smirking) Oh, it's you.
    Kisume: Yay, you came back!
Marisa: So, didja ever decide what you were gonna do?
  4. Narration box: Subterranean Animism, stage 1
(Purple Underground-background; Marisa (in SA outfit) and Reimu come across Kisume.)
    Kisume: HUMANS!!
    Marisa: Huh ... a tsurube-otoshi!
Reimu: (cheerful) Hmm ... I wonder if the Spell Card rules are in use in the Underground ...
  5. Kisume: (cheerful) Oh, I *could* challenge you with the Spell Card rules ... but that would be too sensible!
    Marisa: (flatly) "Too sensible," huh?
Reimu: (angry) Hey! I worked hard on those!
  6. (Marisa and Reimu exchange a glance.)
Kisume: Yeah, I have to decide which of the 69,105 things I just came up with I should do to you!
    Reimu: Ummm ...
  7. (Kisume turns away from them; Reimu and Marisa sneak off.)
Kisume: Don't go away, now! I have to go and decide these things!
  8. (Flashback ends.)
Kisume: Ummmm, nope! But I did narrow it down to either eating you or setting you on fire.
Marisa: What? I could kick yer ass six ways from Sunday. Are you nuts!?
  9. (Marisa calls up her Codec.)
Kisume: (cheerful) Yes. Yes, I am.
Marisa: ... Riiiiight. Uh, lemme call Nitori.
  10. (Nitori is at Alice's front door. Alice and Shanghai are there.)
Alice: ... She went to the Underground?
Nitori: Yeah, apparently there's some sort of disturbance going on down there, and she wanted in on it.
  11. Alice: I see. Uh, shouldn't you be staying with that ... Codec thing in case she calls you?
Nitori: Oh, don't worry about that! When I left, I set up an advanced artificial intelligence which is indistinguishable from the real thing!
  12. (Codec screen between AI-Nitori and Marisa. The frequency appears to be "1337.26". Marisa is sweatdropping with narrowed eyes.)
AI-Nitori: I hear it's amazing when the famous purple stuffed worm in flap-jaw space with the tuning fork does a raw blink on Hara-Kiri Rock! I NEED SCISSORS! SIXTY-ONE!
  13. (Marisa turns off the Codec.)
Marisa: Okay, never mind. I'm just goin' on to the Palace of Earth Spirits.
Kisume: Hey, it made sense to me.
  14. (Marisa walks through the Palace of Earth Spirits. Utsuho leans into the panel in a panic.)
    Marisa: Lessee ...
Utsuho: Hey! You're that witch from the surface!
  15. (We now see that Utsuho's not wearing her Third Leg on her arm.)
Marisa: (startled) Oh! I, uh ...
Utsuho: You gotta help me! That gap youkai stole my Third Leg (which was on my arm) and she's gonna try to get it shipped to the surface!
    Utsuho SFX: missing arm-cannon
  16. Marisa: (grinning) Uh ... hmm. Leave it ta me!
Utsuho: And I've gotta find it before Miss Satori gets back! She'll be really mad at me!
  17. (Marisa flies through the Palace on her broom. Satori leans into the panel from behind.)
Marisa: (thought cloud) I better hurry and find their outgoing mail ... I dunno what Yukari's up to, but that arm-cannon could cause *lots* of damage if it fell into the wrong hands! (plus I'll also look for valuable stuff to take)
Satori: Uh, our mail for today already went out.
  18. (Marisa throws her hands to her face, inset in a Metal Gear Solid 2-style "mission failed" screen.)
    Marisa: NOOOOOOOO!!
    Text: FISSION MAILEO
    Text: HAHAHAWHAT 123465 ITSAGAMEOVER
    Text: EMIT/continent
Text: Hoo Dave hide. You'd woo pike your obsessions bedantified? (N/Y)
    Text: qrrbrbirlbel
  19. (Satori is holding Utsuho's arm-cannon.)
    Marisa: ... oh.
Satori: ... and I already found Utsuho's Third Leg.
    Marisa: DAMMIT YUKARI!

If Yukarin isn't sleeping, she's causing trouble for everyone >:3 Oh how I love you, you parasol-holding manipulator of borders~

Wait just a minute...is that a Mundania reference embedded into the NetHack reference?

PS: Your captcha didn't like that the sum of eight and seven is "fifteen" ;)

Dizzy H. Slightly Voided

Ummm ... nope, I dunno anything about Mundania, I was just spoonerizing the words and making real words out of the spoonerism.

And I was just making a captcha based on adding two numbers, not a "parse English as a number" script :P

Raiden Udonge Inaba

Wow, and I thought I was the only person who played both Sons of Liberty and Subteranean Animism. Your comics are an epic blend of Metal Gear and Touhou, and I commend you on your work. Nitori needs scissors. 61 pairs.

Dizzy H. Slightly Voided

In point of fact, I have never played a single MGS game.

I'm just easily taken in by memes. marishrug.jpg

Tewi Inonymous

5 bucks says muffin would still have made the comic even if he never played touhou.

Dizzy H. Slightly Voided

Mmmmmmmno.

PriffyViole

"Fission Mailed!"

Dizzy H. Slightly Voided

also I've now played MGS1 and 2, for the record.
