Touhou Nekokayou: Scarlet Weather Archive in Japanese Red #21

First Previous Random Next Latest

Characters: Medicine Melancholy, Alice Margatroid, Marisa Kirisame, Aya Shameimaru, Reimu Hakurei, Sanae Kotiya, Yukari Yakumo, Eirin Yagokoro

It makes sense that Alice would be quite interested in Medicine Melancholy. See, Alice wants to create an independent doll, and Medicine is an independent doll (note from Future Muffin: Okay, I know, a tsukumogami, but ...). Lots of potential for character interaction and story development there!1 Of course ... well, just see what happened.

That said, this is one of those cases where you start out with a story that's laid out pretty well, but the characters themselves screw it up. The first half a dozen panels went off without a hitch, and then my plans to have Medicine learn not to hate humans got screwed up when Marisa and Reimu started acting in-character. Ah well, at least Eirin will probably set her straight, or at least firmly crooked, and I guess she'll apologize to Alice eventually. Maybe I'll write another prose-story, in which I'll have to actually think about what the characters are doing.

Transcript

  1. (Marisa hovers in front of Alice's house on her broom, meeting her (and Shanghai) there. Medicine shyly peeks her head out from behind the doorway.)
Marisa: ... you *found* an Independent Doll?
    Medicine SFX: shy
Alice: Yeah, I was surprised, too! C'mon, Medicine, come meet my friend!
  2. (Medicine comes out of the house and promptly becomes murderous.)
Medicine: Hi, um -- Wha! Human! KILL! DESTROY!
    Marisa: Whoa!
    Alice: Wha!
  3. (Alice uses Shanghai to blast Medicine into next week with a great big orange beam.)
    Alice: NOBODY THREATENS MY MARISA!
Blue Spell Card: Magic Sign 「Artful Sacrifice」
    Medicine: (off-panel) Yiiiii!
Marisa: (aside) Yeesh. Alice, what'd I tell you about bringing strange youkai home?
  4. (Aya is flying by.)
    Aya: ?
    Medicine: (off-panel) Yiiiii
  5. (She is knocked off-panel, leaving behind a trail of powerups.)
    Aya: (off-panel) ACKPTH!
    SFX: SPOOOOOOOOON!
  6. (Aya and Medicine lie in a forest somewhere.)
    Aya: Blargh poison
    Medicine: Owies, I've been broken!
  7. Marisa: (off-panel) In my defense, it isn't actually my fault that Alice flipped out like that.
Reimu: We should still at least make sure she didn't land in anyone's water supply.
    Medicine: Owies, I've been broken!
  8. (Reimu, Marisa, and Sanae arrive.)
    Reimu: There she is ...
Marisa: Huh, guess she hit Shameimaru, too.
Sanae: Oh, good, you found her! ... them!
    Medicine: Owies, I've been broken!
  9. (They land.)
Marisa: Should we really *help* her? I mean, she kinda lunged murderously at me ...
Sanae: Well, Eirin *did* make us promise in exchange for giving us that spell that's shielding us from the poison.
Reimu: What should we do about Aya?
    Medicine: Uwaaa, sorries!
  10. (Yukari leans into the panel. A gap appears under Aya.)
    Yukari: Leave that to me!
    Reimu: Huh? Yukari?
Marisa: Meh ... well, good enough for me. Hate to see someone hurtin' like that, ze ...
Sanae: Okay, I'll send up the signal for Eirin, then ...
    Medicine: Auuu ...
  11. (Yukari pulls the gap off-panel, with Aya resting on it. Marisa gets out her mini-hakkero.)
Yukari: Well, I'll make it so she's in less danger from the poison until Eirin gets here ...
    Reimu: Um ... okay ...
Marisa: (cheerful) Nah, leave that to me.
Sanae: Wha ...? No, Marisa, you'll scare her more and probably blow something up!
    Medicine: Aaah?
  12. Reimu: (staring off-panel in surprise) Wait, wha ... Yukari, what are you doing with her clothes!?
Yukari: (off-panel, cheerful) Well, y'know, they're probably drenched in poison, it'd be too dangerous to even clean them! They'll have to be disposed of!
Marisa: (slyly) Ah, c'mon, I'll be pointin' straight up, the worst thing that can happen is knockin' out a buncha birds.
Sanae: I think the birds would probably object to that.
    Medicine: Er ...
  13. Reimu: (irate) At least take her somewhere private!
Yukari: Not until Eirin gets here with the antidote!
Marisa: Aw, you're no fun. And my way would get her attention quicker.
Sanae: (charging up magic) Yeah, right.
    Medicine: Auuu ...
  14. (Medicine and Eirin fly through the Bamboo Forest.)
Eirin: ... I see. And what did you learn from this experience?
Medicine: Um ... don't lunge murderously at someone you're being introduced to?
Eirin: ... we'll have to work on that.

1Once, I started wondering if the reason Alice isn't in Phantasmagoria of Flower View might be that ZUN didn't want there to be too many complications when she met Medicine. Then I remembered that the cast includes a character who is half-human and half-ghost, and that "magician" is both a type of youkai and a vocation for a human, and that several characters are pets belonging to other characters, and decided that there must be some reason other than "it would be complicated," such as that he wanted Medicine to be a one-shot character who appears in one game and then is never heard from again.

All Touhou characters are © Team Shanghai Alice and/or ZUN; create.swf is ⑨ KirbyM with help from Thefre. "Sakura petals" brush in main/4koma logo was made by Kisara Girl. "Falling leaves" brush in 60-Years logo came with Photoshop.
