Characters: Reimu Hakurei, Rin Satsuki, Marisa Kirisame, Utsuho Reiuji, Satori Komeiji, Koishi Komeiji

東方再想天則 〜 Rethinking the Natural Law (Touhou 12.3i) begins here. The title of this one has little to do with the comic itself. Other than, y'know, Rin being Back From The Dead (which should need no TVTropes link).

By the time you have finished reading this story, you should have a fairly clear idea of who the "new villain" is and what she's up to. Rin Satsuki, however, will only provide enough information to confuse the smeg out of you, since I will provide little in the way of exposition for her until The Right Time, since everyone involved already knows everything they want to about the situation.1

Um, sorry for getting serious in panels 6-7-ish ... and panel 10 is not an actual example of I Got Better (Warning, link leads to TVTropes. Muffin will not be held responsible for hours of time lost as a result of following it.But see also this disclaimer).

I'd originally meant to use the "never mind" sequence with Satori in, um, the original version of this arc, but it was yet another victim of my stupidity. Utsuho's multiple "from behind" sweatdrops were a bit of a problem, since you can't spawn "sweatdrop objects" and most hairs have lines which interfere with the shape (making it hard to isolate them in Photoshop), but I was in luck: the "none"-hair is perfeclty positioned to do such a thing!

The hardest part, though, was getting Satori's expression right in panel 20; I eventually had to give up, and just used generic eyes.

I wasn't satisfied with Reimu and Marisa's established ages with respect to the timeline, so on 1 March 2010 I adjusted things a bit and removed giving an explicit age (in case I ever change my mind again).

And the plot thickens. Ish.

Transcript

  1. (Reimu and Rin Satsuki stand on Hisou Tensoku's shoulder.)
Reimu: You never did seem to think that talking was actually a kind of *communication,* did you?
Rin: Hey, a more-mysterious-than-thou attitude is the one remaining thing I can have over *her.*
  2. Reimu: ... You mean Yukari Yakumo?
    Rin: If you like.
Reimu: Um ... yeah, uh ... Marisa and I know what happened between you two ...
Rin: Ah, I thought she might have told you about that last year.
  3. Reimu: (annoyed) Whatever. I don't feel like indulging in your fixation on giving useless answers, so I'm not even gonna *ask* how you came back.
Rin: (cheerful) From which? The sphere of annihilation Dracula threw at me, or Yukari?
    Reimu: EITHER ONE!
  4. Rin: Well, in Dracula's case, I'd had practice from what Yukari did ...
    Reimu: That wasn't an invitation!
Rin: ... and in Yukari's case, I got help from a girl you haven't met yet, who'd previously been responsible for the current Incident.
  5. (Beat panel. Reimu sort of glares, and Rin has a faint smirk.)
    Text: .....
  6. Reimu: Rin Satsuki, believe it or not, you're the first youkai who I thought of as a friend.
Rin: Thank you! The feeling's actually mutual.
Reimu: And if you're planning on coming back for good, it's going to be kind of awkward, because, well ... you died.
  7. (Reimu takes a few steps away.)
Reimu: Marisa and I avenged you, and grieved, and moved on in our lives, and now we're both nine years older.
    SFX: step
Rin: Ah, yes ... I was wondering if that might cause ... issues ...
Reimu: Right. And your allergy for giving a straight answer is *not* helping.
  8. Reimu: So if you can find it in your heart to answer just *one* question, to the letter *and* the spirit, that would help things greatly.
Rin: Well ... all right, what's the question?
  9. (Reimu screams at her as Marisa flies over.)
Reimu: WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON!?
Rin: (goofily) Oh, hello, Marisa ...
  10. (Marisa lands.)
Marisa: Hey, Rin ... didn't you get annihilated out of existence?
    SFX: broom disappear!
    Rin: I got better.
Reimu: She was just explaining that to me, actually ...
  11. Rin: Well, all right. There's a youkai fooling around who has gained the ability to travel through time.
Marisa: Uh, okay, there's like ten different reasons why that's damn near impossible.
Rin: But not *completely* impossbile, though.
  12. Rin: But the short of it is, she has it in for *you,* Reimu, and wants to steal your thunder.
    Reimu: Why?
Rin: I gather it's because in her home time, you've got *lots* of it to steal.
  13. (Rin opens a gap and turns towards it.)
Rin: But why don't we head back to your Shrine. Is it Still as bare of faith as ever?
Marisa: Wait -- that's one of Yukari's gaps!
Rin: Where did you think *she* got them?
    Reimu: Hah!
  14. (They approach the gap, and Rin prepares to fly into it.)
Rin: I can't manipulate boundaries, Gaps are all I have left.
Marisa: Oh yeah -- before we go, what happened to the ice fairy and the hell raven? Weren't they fighting you?
    Rin: Well ...
  15. Narration Box: A little while before Reimu and Sanae arrived ...
(Utsuho and Rin are facing off on the shoulder of Hisou Tensoku, as before.)
    Utsuho: Uh ... what?
Rin: (sweatdrop) ... it ... means bad things will happen if you try to nuke me.
  16. Utsuho: (leaping forward) Um, they'll only happen to you!!
    Rin: Perhaps. Look behind you.
  17. (Utsuho turns.)
    Utsuho: Unyu?
Rin: ... I'm almost depressed that you actually looked.
  18. (A giant Satori looms over Utsuho with a murderous face against a sketchy dark background.)
    Satori: UTSUHO REIUJI
    Utsuho: (multi-sweatdrop) asdfghjkl zxcvbnmqw
  19. (On the shoulder of Hisou Tensoku, Satori advances on Utsuho angrily; Rin watches on with a smirk.)
Satori: We are going RIGHT back to the Palace I am EXTREMELY disappointed in you how many TIMES must I tell you not to threaten people and
    Utsuho: Ah! ... Ah ... awk ...
  20. (Satori suddenly stops, staring at Utsuho, who has a thought cloud over her head containing Cirno's face.)
    Satori: .....
Rin: (thought cloud) (extremely dense chess-terminology for the purpose of blocking prying Third Eyes)
  21. (Somewhere in the Palace of Earth Spirits, Satori comes across Koishi.)
Satori: Koishi? About you and Flandre, um ... "never mind."
    Koishi: (astonished) Okuu did WHAT!?

1This is me refusing to engage in As You Know (Warning, link leads to TVTropes. Muffin will not be held responsible for hours of time lost as a result of following it.But see also this disclaimer) and I will therefore have the characters speak realistically. I mean, it's okay to have a character say, "Hey, Jeff, I thought you got hurt in a car accident!" It is not okay for them to say, "Hey, Jeff! You're my buddy who I met in my sophomore year in college and then we always went to the same parties! I thought you were still in the hospital from a car accident!" This way, I can keep up the suspense until I'm ready to actually reveal it. Hey, it worked in Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2.

All Touhou characters are © Team Shanghai Alice and/or ZUN; create.swf is ⑨ KirbyM with help from Thefre. "Sakura petals" brush in main/4koma logo was made by Kisara Girl. "Falling leaves" brush in 60-Years logo came with Photoshop.

I sorta wonder what Satori was thinking right there...

Poor Satori and Koishi

When would we get to see Meimu?

sRc

okay, now I can't unhear Rin speaking with a goofy British accent. thanks for that "I got better."

Um... ah heck, is anything Rin does mora- [imagetags do not work, deleted by muffin]-brick'd-

"I'm almost depressed that you actually looked" is way more funny than it has any right to be.

Wait, new villain? Does that mean Meimu has been demoted?

Dizzy H. Slightly Voided

I meant "new" as in "as of the retcon, hasn't been revealed yet."

Duran

I guess Satori found Okuu's taste in a girlfriend stranger than Koishi's.

i thought the trick to blocking mindreaders was loud drumming

Facteur Rien

There is something I don't understand: if Satori was worried about Koiisi, how did Koiishi managed to understand what Utsuho done?
Because Satori went to ask about Koisshi & Flandre, and Koiishi ask back with Utsusho & (9). How did she know that?

Oh, and btw, think about a brick wall.

CapedLuigisYoshi

It's spelled Koishi, and her third eye was open, which is how their species reads minds.

Zekira

Uh, is it just me or did the second image set just pop out of somewhere? I'm pretty sure that wasn't there before 96-100 got purged

Dizzy H. Slightly Voided

Image set? What?

Facteur Rien

Oh, yes my bad. I forgot that you opened her third eye. I'm so used to the third-eye-less Koishi...

And, about her name, I don't have habit to spell japanese name. So, don't get angry if I forgot or if I add an "I", thanks.

Facteur Rien

Sorry to repost, but I think Zekira is talking about the second part of your comic. You're splitting the comic into many part to allow faster loading, or something like this, right?
I suppose Zekira was shocked to see a case coming from nowhere when the first part wasn't completly loaded (Can you melt my two post into one, please? Thanks).

Happens to me all the time, but I usually let these things load in a new tab so the page is done before I see it.

Zekira

Ah w/e, never mind what I said. I think I'm breaking something by asking something so trivial (no I'm not referring to the second image, but rather, something that I know that wasn't there before...)

PriffyViole

I just got the meaning of the last panel now.
