東方再想天則 〜 Rethinking the Natural Law (Touhou 12.3i) begins here. KER-RETCON, a whole month has gone bye-bye, this is unprecedented serious affair! I am now focusing on doing things the silly way. (See also: everything else I've done to the rest of the comic!)

So, now we learn something about Sakuya's backstory — she was a youkai-slayer called Huntress who disappeared when she went off to fight Remilia in 1997! Of course, you might have known this already if you're paying attention. But I will now liken the sisters' panic-attack to if you suddenly realized that the retail clerk you've been harassing is actually a Terminator. (Thank you, Mokou, for creating the image! Here's the full version.) Also, oh look, I am riffing on the As You Know (Warning, link leads to TVTropes. Muffin will not be held responsible for hours of time lost as a result of following it.But see also this disclaimer) trope!

"B'duh" is a noise I commonly make when doing something stupid, i.e. every time I accidentally forget to hide the interface before taking the screenshot, thus leaving a nice little "Untitled : Part 1" in the corner of the screen, I mutter "B'DUH!" And if you aren't sure about Meiling's SFX in panel 14, remember what "neko kayou" means!

I didn't get a chance to use all the "floating black thingies" I'd made, oh well. Mugetsu and Gengetsu, if this were actually in the fighting game, would be a "single character" whose gimmick is that you're playing both of them, and you switch between them with a particular move (some alt-cards allow you to attack in the process). Mugetsu is the fast one and Gengetsu is the strong one; their ability-cards are specific to whichever one you're playing as, but their Spell Cards can be used by either, though they may have different effects depending on which one is out. Their themesong is called "The Inevitably Forbidden Game ~ Icemilk Magic and Innocence," and their associated weather-pattern is Blue Moon, resembling Mugetsu's background, and has the effect of (a) replacing your moves with alt-moves of a random level whether or not you have the appropriate alt-cards, and (b) causing people who hate the weather system to go berserk.

Yes, I realize that this has gone pretty much on a big tangent compared to "retelling Touhou 12.3," but really, Meiling's storyline didn't really have a whole lot to do with UNL's storyline to begin with (to the extent that it had one). I suppose I can get away with this for now.

Transcript

  1. Narration Box: So Patchy does her tracing-spell thing, and ...
(Meiling and Sakuya fly through fantastic and surreal space.)
Sakuya: Yeah, this is a dream-world, all right ...
Meiling: What gave it away? The red stars against a maroon sky, the weird blue-black shapes hovering all over everywhere, or the fact that I can't feel any air but we can still breathe?
  2. (They continue flying along.)
Sakuya: Now, now, there's no reason to harp on the obvious.
Meiling: (grinning back at her) But that's what *you* -- um ... hey!
  3. (They near the end of the Extra Stage.)
Meiling: Hm. I'm sensing some powerful chi up ahead ... I think we're almost at the end!
Sakuya: (readying a knife) Right! We'd better get ready, then!
  4. Narration Box: Soon, the camera-angle tilts upward!
(They fly over blue-black plains, with purple mountains sticking up out of the horizon.)
Meiling: This place is way bigger than it looked like from a distance ...
Sakuya: Yeah ... Is it just me, or did reality in that whole area seem kind of half-assed?
  5. (Mugetsu arrives.)
Mugetsu: That's because that region is the edge of this world, where people don't belong. Hello, I'm Mugetsu.
Meiling: Oh, hi, my name is Hong Meiling. You might remember me from a dream a little while ago where you called me "China" ...
Sakuya: Ah, so this is one of the ones who put that dream-spell on you?
  6. Mugetsu: (nervous) B'duh?
Meiling: Yeah, you kinda gave away the fact that you aren't part of my mind, *just* with that comment.
Sakuya: Come to think of it, I can't remember the last time *I* called her that ...
  7. (Mugetsu sinks slightly.)
    Mugetsu: (terrified) Gleep!
    SFX: RECOGNITION! Also, midair stumble!
Meiling: (glowing red eyes.) So, where's the other one?
Sakuya: (slasher smile) We'd both like to meet her. We'd like it a lot!
  8. (Gengetsu flies over.)
Gengetsu: Two against one? That's hardly fair to ... oh.
Meiling: Aha! And here's the other one!
Mugetsu: Ahahaha ... Th-this is my sister Gengetsu, uh, we made this dreamworld ... well, I mean, I did mostly, but ...
Sakuya: Is that all you have to say?
  9. Gengetsu: (sweatdrop) Um ... look ... Sorry about the fish, but ...
Meiling: (angry) But *what*!? Patchy said it could have HURT me!
Mugetsu: (fearful) W-we were testing it to use on the w-witch ...
Sakuya: (darkly) Oh, well, that makes it all okay, then.
  10. Gengetsu: (sternly) ... but at the moment you're just intruders, and since you're not in Gensokyo, we don't have to follow the Spell Card rules, so --
Mugetsu: (aside) Geeeeen! That maid's the HUNTRESS!
    Meiling: Hmm?
    Sakuya SFX: smirk
  11. (A shadowy image of a silver-haired figure with a knife in one hand and a golden pocketwatch with a blood-red dial in the other.)
Text: She went by many names, and no one knew who she truly was, but most people called her the Huntress. Some said she was the greatest youkai hunter in the world. No one denied that she was one of the best.
Text: She could control time itself. She could throw hundreds of knives with the martial art of "danmaku." They said she was as merciless as the demons she fought.
Smaller Text: (... which sounded more interesting than "she showed the exact same amount of mercy as whoever she was currently fighting.")
Text: She went to fight a vampire called the Scarlet Devil in 1997, and neither of them was ever heard from again.
  12. (Meiling and Sakuya are both smirking now.)
Gengetsu: Mu ... all of us know all that.
Mugetsu: Yes, but you've still spent the past five minutes antagonizing, and this after nearly harming the girlfriend of, the human most qualified to kill demons like us.
  13. (Beat panel; they all stare across at each other.)
  14. (Sakuya charges forward, and Meiling darts backward with a catlike grin. The Getsu sisters blanch.)
    Meiling SFX: Nekokayou!
Sakuya: No Spell Card rules? I accept your terms!
  15. (Sakuya unleashes a thick huge swarm of knives, which even startles Meiling.)
    Meiling: Whoa!
    Gengetsu: Waugh!
    Mugetsu: Meep!
  16. (They watch them go.)
Meiling: Are we going after them?
Sakuya: Mmm, nah. We aren't the Shrine Maiden and the witch. Unless you *wanted* more revenge than that.
  17. (An aperture suddenly opens behind Meiling, who dodges. Sakuya whirls around.)
    SFX: ZUN
    Meiling: Then -- ack!
    Sakuya: What!?
  18. Sakuya: ... On the other hand, they're *really* starting to make me want to question my policy of not encouraging my reputation for being murderous.
SFX: which I was trying to get away from
Meiling: Um ... Sakuya, I don't think they made this ... thing.
  19. Sakuya: Really?
Meiling: Yeah ... The chi looks all wrong. Doesn't seem to be a dream-thing like the rest of this world, for one thing ... also, magibabble blah blah blah ...
  20. Sakuya: Hmm. Now that you mention it ...
Meiling: It seems to be some sort of gateway. Wanna give it the ol' youkai-hunter try?
  21. (Sakuya throws a really big amount of knives into it.)
    Sakuya: Suuuuure!
  22. (Sakuya politely gestures for Meiling to enter the aperture.)
    Sakuya: After you, dearest~!
    Meiling: Why, thank you, darling!
  23. (Meanwhile, Mugetsu and Gengetsu are fleeing thourgh the dreamworld.)
Gengetsu: Are you sure this isn't far enough?
Mugetsu: (terrified) We'll never be far enough! Even in our own dreamworld!
    Gengetsu: .....

Well, I must admit, you made the "then I won't follow the spell card rules" flow a lot better this time.

Meimu is missing, though... what, are all the characters going to gather together to beat her up? At the same time, I mean?

Also, since the arc is still not-over: was Sakuya's knifing of the Getsu sisters mora- -megabrick'd-
