Touhou Nekokayou: Scarlet Weather Archive in Japanese Red #87

First Previous Random Next Latest

Characters: Medicine Melancholy, Eirin Yagokoro, Fujiwara no Mokou, Alice Margatroid, Marisa Kirisame, Kaguya Houraisan

Oh, look, a sequel. Eleven months after the original, even! (And it used my second choice for that comic's title!)

This comic went through several iterations in my head. At first it was just going to begin with Marisa hanging a lampshade (Warning, link leads to TVTropes. Muffin will not be held responsible for hours of time lost as a result of following it.But see also this disclaimer) on webcomics that open with an unrelated gag. Then I decided it would be better to show why Medicine went berserk. And then that started to take longer ... Oh yeah, Alice's dead-end was also a reference to a reaction of a friend of mine to some of Luxia Continent's stuff with that kind of subject.

But yeah. It kinda got bogged down partway through. I needed to end this mini-arc with Medicine liking humans, after all. I decided to go with, well, um, the above, of Medicine actually randomly getting a clue.

I figured I should at least mention in-comic that I now know the difference between a tsukumogami and an independent doll.

I've somewhat solved my tendency to forget to actually screencap the comic's panels: screencap it, and then transcribe it.

Transcript

  1. (Medicine, Eirin, and Mokou wander through the Bamboo Forest. Medicine is babbling stupidly and Mokou is looking mildly infuriated.)
Medicine: I just dunno ... I mean, it's hard thinking of humans as being good guys. I mean, they *have* enslaved dolls ...
Eirin: (gently) We've ... been through this before, Medicine. Dolls made by humans aren't real people. You're a special case.
  2. (Medicine's foolishness annoys Mokou further.)
Medicine: I know, but still! I can't help but dwell on might-have-beens. Stupid humans ...
Eirin: Um, you can't blame humans for *that*. Look, I thought you knew this -- Mokou's human, Kaguya and I are Lunarian humans ...
  3. (Closeup of Medicine reacting in horror against a sketchy pink background.)
    Medicine: AUGH, WHAT!? NOOOOOOOOOO!!
  4. (Medicine flies off and unleashes a huge cloud of poison.)
    Medicine: WAAAAAA!!
    SFX: POISON'D!
    Eirin: Mmph! Medicine, s-stop!
    Mokou: Blargh, poison!
    Eirin SFX: immune to poisons
    Mokou SFX: immortal
  5. (Alice and Marisa are in Alice's house. Shanghai floats behind her.)
Alice: Sigh ... another dead end in my independent-doll research ...
Marisa: Another one? What was it this time?
Alice: "requires that you steal an existing soul from elsewhere."
Marisa: Uh, yeah, that's definitely not good, ze.
  6. (The entire house shakes.)
    SFX: KER-WHAMMY
  7. (Alice rushes outside, accompanied by Shanghai; Medicine is hovering there.)
    Alice: What ...? Medicine?
Medicine: Alice Margatroid! You are a traitor to all dolls everywhere because you control them against their will!
  8. Alice: They don't *have* any will.
    Medicine: Th-that's not the point!
    Alice: Yes it is.
  9. (Medicine turns away, teary-eyed.)
Medicine: Waaaa! Why does everyone break apart my arguments!?
Alice: Because they're bad ones, and you're aware of this.
  10. (Medicine clasps her hands together in a heartfelt sparkly-eyed manner.)
Medicine: I just can't help but think of all the enslaved dolls ...
    Alice: MOST DOLLS AREN'T PEOPLE!
  11. (Closeup of Marisa against a sketchy pink background.)
    Marisa: NO WAY! THAT'S IMPOSSIBLE!
  12. (Marisa hovers over them on her broom.)
Alice: What? Why are *you* saying that? (aside) And why were you in your summer clothes for a second?
Marisa: I dunno, it seemed like the thing to say.
    Medicine: Auu ...
  13. (Medicine glomps towards Marisa.)
    Medicine: I'M SORRYYYYYYYY!!
    SFX: GLOMP
    Alice: Eep ...
    Marisa: ACK! WATCH THE POIS--
  14. (Alice and Eirin confront a teary-eyed Medicine at Eientei; an ill Marisa is lying on a mat nearby, with her hat by her side.)
Eirin: ... and that's why you shouldn't hug people unless you've got your poison fully retracted.
Kaguya: (aside, off-panel) Wait, so, you dealt with the poison by burning your clothes and then regenerating them?
Mokou: (aside, off-panel, Konata-faced) Yeah ... it got rid of the poison!
Marisa: (sweatdrop) Blargh poison ... freaking tsukumogami ...

On the Internet?

Exactly that is the reason - This is the internet. It's nigh-impossible to not find something somewhere

Well, Medicine has also been actively associating herself with Eirin since PoFV, presumably (on Eirin's part) so that she can live up to her name (medicines are just another type of poison, after all, it's just a matter of kind and dosage), and Eirin presumably knows precisely what kind of poison(s) she is likely to spew off in a panic. Also, with Gensokyo's "active disbelief allows it to exist" nature, maybe universal-poisions does apply?

As for the question of whether a tsukumogami is alive, strictly speaking: I'm going to cop out and say that anything sentient/with a spirit of its own which does not already fall under the category of "dead" (e.g. ghosts) is "alive," because there's a lot of different types of non-human beings out there, even if you restrict yourself to the Japanese culture and "youkai," so if you don't specify something as sweeping as "Yes, unless outright dead," you'll never get anything else done as you bicker about where someone falls on the scale ("'e's not quite alive! 'e's just restless!").

@Anonymous:

"a half-sloshed man"? clearly you must realize that ZUN is a master of the Ballmer Peak

Am I the only one who thinks that Mokou in the last panel looks like she's wearing some kind of blanket with clips on the side, instead of just having her head and hair showing?

You know, in panel 12 it looks like Shanghai is the one speaking.

In Inaba of the moon & Inaba of the earth, Erin is shown drinking things that are clearly marked poison and not even noticing! I'd say enough of that would make her immune to pretty much all poisons.
