Touhou Nekokayou: Scarlet Weather Archive in Japanese Red #74

First Previous Random Next Latest

Characters: Reimu Hakurei, Marisa Kirisame, Sakuya Izayoi, Kisume, Komachi Onozuka

Story begins here. The end is nigh-ish!

Reimu's comment about being "bird-eyed" (a Japanese slang phrase for "able to see in the dark") in panel 2 is a sort of continuation from conversations with Rumia in Embodiment of Scarlet Devil and Mystia in Imperishable Night in which she fervently denied that she was unable to see in the dark, despite the fact that she obviously can't. (In panel 3, they're talking about my interpretation of events in Perfect Cherry Blossom.)

The biggest limitation in create.swf is that it can't show posture. I would've loved to show Sakuya slumping in an infuriated pose in panel 7 and just slumping in panel 9 ... though I suppose what I've got works, too, as far as that goes.

Kisume, whom I've already been characterizing as completely freaking nuts, was included here specifically so I could provide a silly origin for Marisa's outfit in UFO. And then long-panel is looong — and contains the original statement of Reimu's derision, "repeated" in comic #49!

The late sunset background was just a gradient with swirly bits done to it, I guess. The "by Sanzu" background was just the new "lakeside" background, tinted purple.

Transcript

  1. (Reimu (cat-eared), Marisa (cat-eared), and Sakuya fly through the sky; it is late sunset.)
Reimu: We're almost at the Sanzu River!
Sakuya: And it's almost night time ...
  2. (Reimu and Marisa get cat-like grins (complete with cat-eyes).)
Reimu: Don't worry, cats can see in the dark! (aside) I'm not worried about being bird-eyed this time.
Sakuya: And I'm used to serving Remilia ... Um, are you sure she'll be *at* the Sanzu River? Eirin did just say she was going *towards* it.
  3. Reimu: Oh, relax, even if we don't find the culprit that way, we'll at least be one step closer to our goal!
Sakuya: Uh-huh. The last time you said that, we blundered into Mayohiga, then almost froze to death in a snowstorm.
Marisa: Yeah, but then Alice pointed us in the right direction, so that worked fine.
  4. (Kisume hovers in her bucket by the Sanzu river next to Komachi.)
Kisume: But I mean, the tsurube-otoshi species *must* be insane by definition! I mean, what kind of sane creature lives in a bucket all the time!?
Komachi: Um ... right. Look, if you're not dead, you shouldn't hang around here.
  5. (Reimu, Marisa, and a vaguely annoyed Sakuya fly in, startling Komachi.)
Kisume: (partially obscured by Reimu's speech balloon) That's what I'm saying! Keeping away from this place would be sane! I'm *insane*! None of that keeping-away stuff for me!
    Reimu: HERE WE ARE!
    Komachi: Wha!
  6. (Reimu, Marisa, and Sakuya against a background of vertical speedlines)
    Reimu: We are ...
Reimu: The lovely shrine maiden of paradise, (red text) REIMU HAKUREI
Marisa: The hero from the foot of the mountain, (green text) MARISA KIRISAME
Sakuya: (blue text) WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU TWO DOING!?
  7. Reimu: (annoyed) Hey! You ruined our intro-posing!
Marisa: C'mon, Sakuya, do that cool timestopping pose thing you do!
    Sakuya: mrmphgl
  8. (Sakuya does the Dio Brando pose, stopping time.)
  9. (Sakuya sighs, a puff appearing by her mouth)
    SFX: five minutes breather
  10. (Back to the scene by the river. Kisume floats off to one side, pouting.)
Komachi: Uh, if you're looking for that hell-raven who was causing a ruckus, she doubled back over to Youkai Mountain.
Reimu: Huzzah, I was right! We have acqired more information!
  11. (Komachi wanders off, while Reimu and Sakuya fly off in the other direction; Marisa gets out her broom, but she is stopped by Kisume.)
    Reimu: TO YOUKAI MOUNTAIN!
Kisme: Just a minute! You there, Marisa-witch-person!
    Marisa: Hmm?
  12. Kisume: You said you're a hero, but you can't be! You aren't dressed ridiculously enough!
    Marisa: Ridiculously, huh?
  13. Text: ......
  14. (The top of a really long panel, with nothing blackness at the upper part.)
    Reimu: Marisa?
    Marisa: Yeah?
Reimu: I have to congratulate you.
    Marisa: Sup?
Reimu: You managed to snap me out of my catness-induced hyper-ness, all by yourself.
    Marisa: Cool!
Reimu: Um, no, it's not cool, exactly.
    Marisa: Huh?
Reimu: It's you ... new outfit.
Marisa: What!? What's wrong with it!?
Reimu: What's *wrong* with it!? Where do I begin!
Marisa: 'Ey! You know there's a fine line between genius and insanity!
Reimu: eah, well, this is nowhere near it.
    Marisa: Shaddap, this outfit's cool!
(We now see that Marisa is in her outfit from UFO.)
Reimu: MARISA, THAT OUTFIT AND WAND ARE THE MOST RIDICULOUS THINGS YOU'VE HAD SINCE YOU RODE THAT FLOWER ... THING WHEN YOU WORKED FOR MIMA!
    Marisa: (cheerful) Bah!
    Sakuya: .................... ...................

What, nobody found the second hidden-hint!? Yeesh. Maybe I shouldn't have mentioned timeparadox.png (since that's a "for use in whatever comic I want to use that panel in" kinda thing). Oh well, not like it'd be that helpful. Anyway, this is the last comic before the Band Of Heroines (or at least one Band Of Heroines) reaches and confronts the culprit! In honor of the impending momentous occasion, I am putting part of the hidden hint in every panel (again, thcomic/74-##.png and thcomic/74title.png). The not-hidden hint, about the item that was used for a power-boost, is: a rope! No, not that one.

All Touhou characters are © Team Shanghai Alice and/or ZUN; create.swf is ⑨ KirbyM with help from Thefre. "Sakura petals" brush in main/4koma logo was made by Kisara Girl. "Falling leaves" brush in 60-Years logo came with Photoshop.

Oh god, I LOL'd. That outfit does make our favorite forest dwelling magical girl look even more like a magical girl doesn't it? I still remember people RAEGing about it IRC.

Star

That was the most epic Reimu-Marisa conversation I've seen.

Tewi Inonymous

People didn't like that outfit? BLASPHEMY!
Also there's a distinct lack of beating up random people to resolve this incident.

TA

Well, I have most of it. I can't find the clues in 74-09.png and 74title.png, though.

KirbyM

That one panel reminded me of the Powerpuff Girls, though I don't think they ever introduced themselves in that way. Maybe it was just the text coloring.

Anonymous

Sakuya's ZA WARUDO is pose-activated?

SoF

My first thought upon reading Kisume's insanity rant was a quote from Catch-22. Or... rather, the page quote from Catch-22's trope page (warning, link goes to The Forbidden Site, your safety not guaranteed, please consult your doctor, etc.)

Clearly, if she is insane, then she cannot make the determination that she is not sane, because only sane people can recognize insanity. But if she is not insane, then she is sane, and she IS capable of self-diagnosing insanity... but then she's not qualified, because she's insane. So, yeah.

Also!

"'Ey! You know there's a fine line between genius and insanity!"

Dizzy H. Slightly Voided

@TA: Ah, um, there isn't anything in the title's file, sorry. |3

Maybe I should put something there, though ... :3

@Anonymous: Nah, she just stopped time to give herself a break for a few minutes. :3

@SoF: The titular "Catch-22" makes a lot more sense than the quote suggests ...

Asator

Aw great, the clues in the ninth and ... panel are hidden the same way as the second hint from last time, aren't they.

Also, I think I'm starting to see why Sakuya isn't in any of the recent games...

Dizzy H. Slightly Voided

@Asator: No, they're not. :3

And she is in the recent games, she's in Scarlet Weather Rhapsody, and probably 12.3 if you use it as an expansion. :3

Asator

Well, SWR has everyone who'd been a pseudo-main character up to that point (except for Mima and Yuka *shakes fist*), so it doesn't really count.

Dizzy H. Slightly Voided

So? Story-wise, she's still going voluntarily.

VIVI

i begin to laugth when Marisa and Reimu said their rimbombantic-poetic titles (who are changed in even incident!)remind me too the Team Rocket from Pokemon...
Yes,i like the new Marisa outfit except for the M apron...i liked more the white one,and maybe a bag with the M in it would be work better.(probably use it because she was bored who certain people called her "black-white" and the apron help them to remind her name..or only the first letter.XD)
and,after read the Catness nº-11 interlude,was irresistible make this.http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o20/Heiwa_album/nyaness.jpg
(Sariel, like one of the first boss in the Touhou universe,is a Powerful-catness, and Youki, who only appear because is named in Perfect Cherry Blossom, is seen like a "badass" old guy for the fans (even Youmu said who he is better than her) badass-cat. Finally, the two are in Kourindou because...im a fangirl,i continously make draws about the two combinations (in yaoi style, remember who Sariel can be male or female or something) and i said before, was irresistible.)

Dizzy H. Slightly Voided

Yeah, but Sariel lives in Makai, she wouldn't be affected. ;3

Okay, seriously, a hint for you crazy people: I've made the panel 9 clue easier to spot, and as for the other ones you apparently can't find, it's not in the standard-panels like 17-14.png and timeparadox.png.

Asator

Oh, didn't see that one coming. Now I just have to...oh great, one of these solutions.

*chucks the jumble of letters against a wall*
*picks it back up and starts playing with them*

Nimmy

[x] It's a Moriya Yasaka Shrine conspiracy

Also, I thought the outfit was a bit... much the first time I saw it. I dunno, maybe it'll grow on me eventually.

Asator

I believe I've found the answer.

Game over.
Seems I was right all along.

Though now I wish I'd saved my Sleepy Hollow reference for this one.

TyrannoRexaur

More than a clue, that one in the 9th panel actually gives you the answer, so... it was little meaningless trying to find out all of the hints, now then, that feeling of "meaningless work" could just be my lazyness.
