Characters: Kogasa Tatara, Three Mischievous Fairies

I'm not entirely sure how I came up with the idea this comic, but I think it mostly speaks for itself. (Show of hands, who figured it out beforehand from the color schemes of the Great Old Umbrellas?) I'm rather pleased with the effect of being able to indicate who's "talking" with which bit of floaty text just from the color. This is by no means unique to me, mind you, I just thought it'd be cool.

I actually did some research to get data for panel 6.

The advantage of that particular forest background in the last few panels is that, unlike every single other background in create.swf (except the zooming-through-bamboo one), there's more than one version of it, so you can show different parts of the same forest e.g. for chase scenes like this. With other backgrounds, it's difficult to do that if you're lucky.

Transcript

  1. (Kogasa floats in some sort of dark void, eyes closed, without her umbrella.)
  2. Kogasa: (waking up) Uh ...? Where am I?
  3. Demonic Orange Text: KOGASA TATARA ...
    Kogasa: (terrified) Wha!
  4. (Three giant karakasa-umbrellas hover in front of her: one is white with a yellow top, one is red with a yellow top, and one is blue with a black top.)
White Karakasa: WE ARE THE GREAT OLD UMBRELLAS.
Red Karakasa: WE EMBODY THE SPIRIT OF THE KARAKASA.
Blue Karakasa: YOUR CONSTANT FAILURE TO CAUSE SURPRISE HAS SHAMED YOUR ANCESTORS.
  5. (Semi-closeup of Kogasa.)
    Kogasa: B-but I've ... wait, ancestors? I'm a tsukumogami, I'm just a lost umbrella that attained sentience, I don't *have* ancestors!
Blue Karakasa: UM ... WELL ... METAPHORICAL ANCESTORS.
White Karakasa: RIGHT. THE ONES WHO CAME BEFORE AND ALL THAT.
  6. (Wide view again.)
Red Karakasa: BUT, uh, KOGASA TATARA, WE HAVE WATCHED OVER ALL COLLAPSIBLE RAIN-GUARDS FOR TENS OF THOUSANDS OF YEARS, AND WE HAVE --
Kogasa: (less-afraid) Tens of thousands!? But, uh, according to the librarian in the Scarlet Mansion, collapsible waterproof umbrellas were only invented 2400 years ago in China!
    White Karakasa: um ...
  7. White Karakasa: .....
    Red Karakasa: .....
    Blue Karakasa: .....
    Kogasa: .....
  8. (Kogasa shoves the background aside, revealing the Three Fairies, plus Kogasa's umbrella.)
Kogasa: AHA! An illusion caused by FAIRY MAGIC!
  9. (The Three Fairies flee in terror.)
Luna Child: How the heck did she *do* that!?
Star Sapphire: I think she used her umbrella, which *wasn't* part of the illusion, to pull herself out of it ...
  10. (Kogasa is almost all the way into the panel.)
Sunny Milk: Is that even possible!?
Kogasa: (grinning wickedly) Surprising, isn't it?

"collapsible rain guards"

I was already chuckling by that part XD After all the abuse poor Kogasa goes through in fandom, it's nice to see her turn the tables around.

I find funny those chains of dots for some reason

Poppy

The Fairies are Ninjas, LOL

Chaos42

I'm still of the belief that the umbrella is her real body. Which means that if the umbrella wasn't in the illusion, Kogasa herself isn't affected.
Now, the real question is how the fairies managed to pull off the illusion...

Kimiko Muffin

Well, the Three Fairies can manipulate light and sound. I figured they just got a bit more creative and detailed than usual.

My theory is that while the "object" of the tsukumogami (as opposed to the "cute girl" thereof) may be the more "real" part, the "cute girl" is still what it/she actually uses primarily see, interact with objects, etc. I base this on the fact that the "cute girl" is the one we see talking and changing facial expressions and whatnot, as well as the fact that she exists to begin with.

Taco

Hooray! Kogasa surprised more people! That brings the score up to 5. (She surprised me with those crazy spell cards @.@)

Echo

Hehe... yes... it is very surprising...

SomethingUnreal

"Collapsible rain guards". That really made me laugh.

*Sigh* Even though I read everything you post, I can never think of anything useful to say in response. =/

Kimiko Muffin

No worries, that first bit was just fine. As for the other, I'm mildly surprised — I hadn't actually meant "collapsible rain guards" to be especially funny, and yet people seem to consider it the high point ... just One Of Those Things, I guess ...

eidrag

I found it quite hard to read the blue collapsible rain guard's dialog (which is dark blue, comparing to the background, which is a little more dark blue(?) from a distance 1 meter. Is anybody having same problem here?

Kimiko Muffin

Ehh ... I was kinda afraid that might happen. It'll take a bit of work to fix, too, since I wasn't exactly going for very precise positioning ... panel 5 might need to be remade entirely ...

Amaterasu-┼Źmikami

"Collapsable rain guard" is my new favorite term for umbrella.

Cat Megex

Well huh, I actually used a collapsible rain guard today. (It was raining a bit.)

Cassie

Hmm, another good one as always. I can't comment there but whatever. Stupid forum.

Rabbit

An amusing prank from the three fairies? Shock!! Yeah, Strange and Bright Nature Deity failed to amuse me.

When I read this comic, I realized that Kogasa may be more powerful than she appears if it would be "suprising" to do so. (Ie, she can do anything if it can be considered "suprising").

ZUN still suprised me in the end. XD
