As you may have noticed, I'm experimenting with a new system for creating comics. It (a) takes up less hard drive space than making a whole image, (b) is easier to put together, (c) facilitates changing the logo for every comic if I wanted to do that, and (d) allows for randomness like this, which can even alter the comments themselves!1 (Eventually, I'm sure someone will figure out taking all the possibilities and showing them to everyone.) That's one of the things you can do with comics on the internet which you physically cannot do in a print comic — I've got shades of Scott McCloud all over again!

For the record, there's two possibilities for every panel except the one with Satori and the three fairies (which has four possibilities) and the "JUST AS PLANNED" one (which has twelve — now with updated Cirno, Eirin, and Flandre!). Ruukoto appeared in the PC-98 Touhou game "Phantasmagoria of Dim.Dream" in Reimu's ending, and was never heard from again. "FISSION HA!" is a parody of the Fusion Dance from Dragon Ball Z, natch.

The "ruined for marriage" bit is a Japanese cultural thing. I'm not entirely 100% certain of the specifics, but it's apparently really dishonorable for a female to have sexual relations before marriage, i.e. no man wants to marry a non-virgin. This is actually the panel that made me decide to go the "randomness" route, actually: I couldn't decide whether or not to include the "worried about it before" line as opposed to what's in the alternate version, so I picked both! (Also, if Kanako and Suwako or Remilia, Sakuya, and Marisa can get into the cast-list without having any lines or any appreciable effect on the "story," I see no reason why Ran and Chen can't be listed if they have lines but no appearance.)

Midori and Mika can speak, ha! When I came up with their "special abilities," I basically just put down the first and most down-to-earth things that entered my head. (As a result, Mika outdoes Rumia for "most useless power ever.") I guess the rabbits of Eientei are just doing some sort of pounding-rice-into-mochi party for some rabbit-festival or other ... I had to make my own rice-mallet-thing image, though.

Not much to say about the bit with Mokou and Kaguya. Except possibly that one of the reasons they're going to tutor Flandre is to teach her some restraint, and How Not To Accidentally Obliterate Your Friends.2 That fairy's, um, just another random fairy-maid that works in the SDM.

Yuugi's final spell card in the first demo of Subterranean Animism was the first one that really choked my computer's performance. This apparently happened to others, as well. It's almost disappointing that this was fixed for the final release. Oh, and this panel shows an entirely different scene in the alternate version.

The pairing of Reimu and Sanae was sort of decided on the spur of the moment with a sort of "sure, why not, what the hell" attitude, while I was considering "who to ship next" after I'd gotten done establishing Alice/Marisa (halfway-canonical) and Mokou/Kaguya (comically implausible). I figured Reimu would handle it with the same sort of lackadaisical attitude that she does everything else. Rinnosuke, of course, has the power to see the name and purpose of object but not how it's used, and when he examines items from the outside world, he's generally half-wrong (i.e. calling a computer a "shikigami"). I figure every time someone comes to Gensokyo from the outside world, he bombards them with questions.

I'm not the first person to follow the train of thought that takes the concepts of "Cirno likes to freeze frogs and watch them harmlessly thaw out, except that she screws up and they shatter a third of the time" and "once, Cirno got attacked by a giant frog" and "Suwako is a frog goddess" ... (Protip: never piss off a goddess.) This panel shows an entirely different scene in its alternate, too.

I'm rather pleased with the effect I got with my "Temple of Earth Spirits" background. (Hooray for "stained glass" effect in Photoshop!) For those who don't know, depending on what character(s) you use, the Japanese word "satori" can either refer to the Buddhist concept of enlightenment, or a type of monster that can read minds. And ZUN, with what I'm increasingly convinced is a characteristic lack of foresight, created a satori named Satori. Yeah ...

The last panel speaks for itself.

Man ... 22 different characters. With a total of 33, counting all the random (and mutually-exclusive) possibilities. When I break my record number of characters, I smithereen it.

Transcript

  • (Rinnosuke at the Moriya shrine, badgering a nervous Sanae, with Reimu standing angrily behind him.)Rinnosuke: Ah, so the devices known as computers are not precisely a form of shikigami as I had previously surmized!?Sanae: Well ... um ...
Reimu: Hey, I'm supposed to be going out with her, like, twenty minutes ago!
  • (Mokou and Kaguya walk through the Scarlet Devil Mansion, led by a fairy-maid going "This way please ...")
Mokou: So, why are *we* going to be Flandre's tutors and teach her about self-restraint, again?
Kaguya: Well, since we can walk away from getting disintegrated, we're the only ones who can come back for a second go if she goes nuts ...
Kaguya: (aside) And no one else wanted to drink the Hourai Elixir just so Flan could safely blow them up ...
  • (Yuugi stands in the middle of a swarm of bullets as in her last spell card, partly engulfing Reimu and Marisa.)
Narration-box: Tales from the first demo:
Yuugi: Does Yuugi have to choke a CPU? I think Yuugi has to choke a CPU!
  • (The Three Fairies run into Satori in the Palace of Earth Spirits, looking fearful.)
Star Sapphire: Wha -- she read my mind!
Sunny Milk: And that eye-heart -- she must be ...
Satori: Yes -- I am a Satori. Now, just what do you three think you're doing here, hmm?
Luna Child: Um ... uh ...Satori: And no wiseguy remarks like "Thanks for actually asking this time."
  • (Yukari and Aya snuggling on Yukari's futon, though it appears to be less-voluntary on Aya's part.)
Yukari: Mmm, you were just delicious, Aya-chan!
AyA: (tears in her eyes) Auuu ... I lost the race, and now I'll never be able to marry!Yukari: Aww, c'mon, were you even worried about that before!?Chen: (off-panel) Um, what's going on, Ran-sama?
    Ran: (off-panel) Um ... uh ... I'll tell you when you're older, Chen ...
  • (In the Underground, Utsuho inserts a giant ball of light into a powered-down Ruukoto, with Orin watching on.)
Orin: Yeah, I wonder who woulda just left a robot like this down here for us to find ... think you can reactivate her?
Utsuho: Well, she's nuclear-powered, so it'll be a piece of cake. FISSION HA!
  • (Near a pond, a giant Suwako confronts a terrified-looking Cirno, who is standing next to a frozen frog.)
Suwako: HOW'S IT GOING THERE, LITTLE ICE FAIRY?
    Cirno: Um ... I ... er ... I'm the strongest?
  • (Mika and Midori are pounding rice in the Bamboo Forest, surrounded by other rabbits.)
Mika: Y'know, Midori, I think the best part of having your flavor manipulation is, it doesn't matter if we make the mochi really badly!Midori: And with you manipulating the breezes in the bamboo, we can have a marginally nicer atmosphere!
  • (Closeup of Satori with her catlike smirk.)
    Text: JUST AS PLANNED!
