Touhou Nekokayou: Scarlet Weather Archive in Japanese Red #15

First Previous Random Next Latest

Characters: Alice Margatroid, Keine Kamishirasawa, Yuka Kazami, Reimu Hakurei, Marisa Kirisame

You have to remember that my knowledge of the PC-98 games is based entirely on what I've gotten from the Touhou Wiki. I mean, I'm sort of only assuming that Mima has a reason to fight the other main characters. (When I made the first Broken History, I hadn't known that Mima was a playable character in Mystic Square.) On the other hand, I haven't recieved any complaints that I'd gotten that wrong, so yeah.

There isn't a separate "grimoire" object that can be spawned separately from characters — I still say it would be easier if every item and accessory were automatically part of the list of Spawnable Objects — so I had to engage in shennanigans using Snapshots to get PC-98 Alice's oversized one.

Touhou canon states that, as of Perfect Cherry Blossom, Alice is a human who became a youkai magician through study. In Mystic Square, however, she seems to be an inhabitant of Makai, and Shinki states that she created "everything" in Makai, thus giving people the impression that she was Shinki's daughter, which seems to be a contradiction. In official Nekokayou continuity (inasmuch as it has anything remotely resembling "continuity"), Alice was a human who somehow managed to get into Makai, and Shinki adopted her. Or possibly Shinki decided to create a "human." Or possibly when history broke a la Thief of Time1, she was changed from being Shinki's youkai daughter (since her actual existence is now officially Uncertain) to being a human, and she studied to change back. (Nope, that possibility's been removed!) Whatever ... as the Joker from Batman says, "If I'm going to have a past, I prefer it to be multiple-choice!"

As for where this is going: probably nowhere.2

  1. (Keine wanders through the Magic Forest.)
Keine: (thought cloud) So much for getting Reimu's help ... Let's see, who *else* is from that era ... I need to find out more!
  2. (Sketchy pink background for Keine using her history-powers.)
Narration Box: Using her power over history, Keine examined the history which was shattered! It was no easy task, however, since there was a wall of narrative text, which was distracting -- oh. Sorry ...
  3. (Keine's eyes bulge magically; images of PC-98 versions of Reimu, Marisa, Yuka, and Alice appear.)
Keine: (thought cloud) I see miscellaneous people! (aside) And they don't know they're miscellaneous!
  4. (Keine arrives at Alice's house; Shanghai is floating behind Alice.)
Alice: Huh? Oh, hello, Keine, what's up?
Keine: Um, I wanted to talk to you about an ... event that happened a while before the Scarlet Mist Incident ...
  5. (Inside Alice's house.)
Alice: Yeah, I kinda figured that someone would want to know about all that eventually. Of course, I haven't exactly kept a journal or anything ...
Keine: That's fine, I can deal with that by using my history powers to create a flashback!
  6. (Yuka wandering through the woods, holding her parasol)
Yuka: Hmph ... went off to fight Mima without me, did they? Ah, well, I'll pick up the pieces after it all blows up in their faces ...
  7. (PC-98 Alice appears in a portal behind her, carrying an oversized grimoire.)
    SFX: ZUN
    Yuka: Hmm ...?
Alice: Aha! You're one of the ones who beat me and my mother!
  8. Yuka: Oh, right, you're the Extra boss from Mystic Square. What do you want?
Alice: I want vengeance! And a rematch! I've memorized even more of my grimoire since last time!
  9. (Yuka grins, tossing her parasol aside.)
Yuka: Ah, I suppose I have time to waste. This should be relaxing ... let's get started.
Alice: Not just you! Where's the others!? I wanna fight them, too!!
  10. (There's some sort of massive explosion behind them; Alice drops her grimoire.)
  11. (A glow comes up behind them.)
Yuka: (pointing) At what I suppose is theoretically a wild guess, I'd say off thataway.
Alice: (looking past Yuka) Sweet Shinki in a bathing suit! WHAT THE HELL'S THAT!?
  12. (Yuka turns as the glow gets brighter.)
Yuka: Oh crap! It's a time paradox, headed this way!
    Alice: A *what*!?
  13. (Alice recounts this to Keine.)
Alice: And then there was a noise like a twanging ruler, and I found myself ... about ten years in the past.
Keine: Hmm ... I guess that explains why you, a youkai, look about the same age as Marisa, but you looked much younger back then ...
  14. Keine: Hang on a second, though ... Makai isn't part of Gensokyo. Would it have been affected the same way the rest of Gensokyo was ...?
    (Alice reacts with astonishment.)
  15. Alice: (cheerful) Nah, it's probably been completely changed, too.
Keine: You're right! This couldn't possibly be a vague sort of foreshadowing of future plot points, either!

1I swear I didn't consciously have this in mind when I made the first Broken History.

Epic quote detected: "Sweet Shinki in a bathing suit! WHAT THE HELL'S THAT!?"

Oh, and by the way, you- ALL GLORY TO THE HYPNOTOAD.

...Is it supposed to be foreshadowing? Or just a quick joke? And if the former, of what? The last "Broken History" comic? Shinki's later appearance in 28 and 29? Possibly Redefined Fanta... no wait, UFO probably hadn't been announced when this comic was made. Something we haven't seen yet?

Eh, you'll find out. And it'll probably turn out less significant than it implies here.
