Touhou Nekokayou: Scarlet Weather Archive in Japanese Red #125

First Previous Random Next Latest

Characters: Shikieiki Yamaxanadi, Reimu Hakurei, Marisa Kirisame

Shiki Month continues. I have all of it planned out! This one is the least-planned of all them, though.

That setup with the gradient in panel 3 is supposed to be reminiscent of the karma meter in Bioware's PS2/Xbox-era RPGs — you know, for the Good/Evil points, or Light Side/Dark Side points, or Open Palm/Closed Fist points, or as I like to call them, Transparent Good/Chaotic Stupid points.1 I guess it was that or just leaving it at just the obscure and nonsensical background imagery.

Transcript

  1. Narration Box: Actual scheduled day off!
(Shikieiki flies through an even *more* random bit of sky.)
Shiki: (thought cloud) Actually, let me doublecheck something. Just to make sure my black-and-white vision isn't broken ...
  2. (She lands at the Hakurei Shrine, where Reimu and Marisa are standing around.)
    Marisa: "Shrine chores."
Reimu: Yeah, yeah, I'll get to 'em when I -- Oh what do *you* want!?
  3. (Shikieiki looks at Reimu against a sort of greyish background, with Reimu in a sphere that's just under halfway filled with black and with a blue-to-red meter that's slightly more than halfway to blue.)
Blue Spell Card: 「Power To See Things In Black And White」
SFX: KINDA SINNING BUT NOT ACTUALLY EVIL PER SE!
    Text: Deadly Sin: SLOTH
    Text: SLIGHTLY BELOW NORMAL PERSON
  4. (At the Shrine scene, Shiki gives Reimu a somewhat silly evil look.)
Shiki: AND WHILE I'M HERE, LET'S CHAT FOR A BIT.
Reimu: (to Marisa) You wanna head home, or help out with fending off her lecture?
Marisa: I'm fine either way, really.

1Even though getting the latter generally required behavior which more closely resembles Stupid Evil (Warning, link leads to TVTropes. Muffin will not be held responsible for hours of time lost as a result of following it.But see also this disclaimer). I just think "chaotic stupid" (which is a different trope (Warning, link leads to TVTropes. Previous disclaimer appliesBut see also this disclaimer)) rolls off the tongue better. Though while we're on the subject, it would probably be amusing to see Shiki's reaction to the fact that repenting from evil deeds would consist of simply doing markedly more good deeds.

All Touhou characters are © Team Shanghai Alice and/or ZUN; create.swf is ⑨ KirbyM with help from Thefre. "Sakura petals" brush in main/4koma logo was made by Kisara Girl. "Falling leaves" brush in 60-Years logo came with Photoshop.

Saiai

Shiki must love this recent gaming trend. Finally, a world that's /already/ as black and white as she sees it!

Hunter 1

Actually, I think Shiki wouldn't have issues with people fixing their bad karma with good deeds...

Bocaj

I guess Reimu is a good enough person to calibrate your 「Power To See Things In Black And White」 on.

R

Unrelated, but there must be some shady Lunarian drugs in the DC water supply. When my evil character in fallout 3 went to kill everyone in Rivet City, the stupid bucket of bolts proved to house an alarming number of immortals.

manonthe3up

That Karma bar looks pretty KOTOR there, Muffin...

Hunter 1

@manonthe3up: Muffin did say he took the layout from the PS2/Xbox era Bioware RPGs, of which KOTOR and KOTOR 2 are examples.

Baka Mastermind

Even Reimu's carma pretty Ying-Yangish, heh... Looks like, she is lazying a LOT more than even Komachi XD

Tinweasel

Reimu has a lot more evil deeds under her hood than just being lazy. She beats up lonely little girls, plunders random villages, repeatedly murders the elderly, violently oppresses opposing religions, and incidentally is a huge racist.

(EoSD extra stage, PCB stage 2, IN extra stage, the whole point of MoF, and the whole point of UFO, respectively.)

Arcc

@Tinweasel: And yet, canonically, Reimu is supposedly one of the nicer, more cheerful people in Gensoukyo. Her aggressive tendencies seem exacerbated by fanon, but it's true that Gensoukyo is nothing if not a dangerous place. I suspect the phrase "warrior culture" is also applicable.

Of course, Kimikanon's a lot nicer place to land when you fall through the cracks. Or at least more amusing.

Shinku Tsuki

Touhou 1: Reimu goes on a genocidal rampage

Touhou 4: Reimu kills a youkai who tried to help her

Touhou 8: Reimu strips away Gensokyo's defenses against a Lunar invasion
Touhou 9: Reimu attacks people for no good reason
Touhou 10: Reimu oppresses other religions
Touhou 10.5: Reimu's shrine falls down so she beats everyone up
Touhou 11: Reimu frustrates plan for creating a new source of energy
Touhou 12: Reimu beats everyone up because she is a racist

Inugami

I was hoping we'd get to see Shieki's take on Marisa, too.

Dizzy H. Slightly Voided

yes, Shinku Tsuki, thank you for your obnoxious regurgitation of a tired meme which relies on misinterpreting canon.

Duran

Reimu has in the latest three fairies manga, warned a fairy kindly to get home before she gets blown away in a upcoming storm. No shooting, no yelling, etc.

Beta Maxis

You'd think saving Gensokyo God knows how many times would up that meter.
Stopping a genocidal maniac? *Journal entry added: Light Side Points Gained*
Stopping a misguided creator being from having her denizens acting as hooligans in her world on their downtime? *Journal entry added: Light Side points gained
Looting Mayohiga? *Wait does anyone LIVE there? Whatever, Dark side points*
Stopping the only genuine evil in Gensokyo from being unsealed? *Journal entry added: Light Side points gained*
Solving a political dispute and/or restoring the moon? *Journal entry added: Light Side points gained*
Stopped a power mad nuclear reactor from OBLITERATING THE WORLD IN A HELLISH INFERO!? *Journal entry added: take a wild guess*

-ED

For the counter-example, that Reimu is not unjustified in her behavior, RedChocobo's ongoing series of images is not to be missed:
TH 1
TH 2
TH 3
aaand 4-7 I won't hotlink because then this won't post until KM approves it.

Kairose

Converted to the Good point of view:
Touhou 1-5: Skipped because I'm not familiar with the PC-98 storyline
Touhou 6: Reimu gets rid of the mist that's blocking out the sun
Touhou 7: Reimu prevents an endless winter
Touhou 7.5: Reimu stops constant parties at her house
Touhou 8: Reimu restores the moon
Touhou 9: Reimu stops a Shinigami's slacking
Touhou 10: Reimu defends her shrine from an opposing religion that's forcing her to shut it down
Touhou 10.5: Reimu beats up a Celestial who knocked down her shrine
Touhou 11: I'll just go with Beta Maxis's comment here: Reimu stopped a power mad nuclear reactor from OBLITERATING THE WORLD IN A HELLISH INFERNO
Touhou 12: Reimu helps unseal a monk who was sealed away for helping Youkai

Dizzy H. Slightly Voided

Okay, we can stop this now.

Morgan

I really have to facepalm whenever I see that interpretation of EoSD. Because, uh, parasol.

zekana

i like to think shiki's black and white viewing works like a game. every good deed you do is +1 point, ever bad is -1, however, what you actually do doesn't reflect that. lets say you rescue a kitten from a tree. plus 1 good. now lets say you stop a madman from killing every single being in existence. stopping them gets you 1 good point only. however, ever time you lay around, auto evil point.

Ozimul

Oh, Shikieiki. You and your business(wo)man's holidays.

Shinku Tsuki

Well, when I saw that I started to laugh really hard, I didn't know that it was SO old and that the people used it THAT many times. I don't think it's misinterpreting canon, I just think that it was a joke that someone made when he was smokin' somethin' xD

Duran

Uber bitch Reimu is a infamous bit of fanon for a while...

As far as EoSD? No one said when the parasol was made, though some think it's just to provoke Reimu.

Reimu isn't a complete saint, but she's far from a complete monster. Though it's not yet known if Reimu apologized/made up for the whole Tokiko mugging in this universe or the canon 'verse.

Shanghai

Reimu is just like everyone else in Gensokyo. Beating the living crap out of anything and everything eventually solves the problem, so it must be the only solution.

Inugami

It's not about good and bad deeds, but good and bad intentions. You can do good deeds for the wrong reasons and do bad things for good reasons. Are you supposed to be rewarded for doing things that were really in your own best interest anyway, rather than because you wanted to help others? Are your good intentions in helping people supposed to be ignored if you failed or made a mistake?
