東方再想天則 〜 Rethinking the Natural Law (Touhou 12.3i) begins here. Also, in case you haven't noticed, I changed the default logo for the other comics!

Rin makes your brain hurt slightly less than she did last time! Sort of. My focus this time around was more on "concentration of jokes per panel," but either way, I hope it's halfway comprehensible whilst still maintaining complete obscurity as to who Rin actually is in this continuity. Okay, here's a hint: Rin's backstory will be further revealed in A Different Story of an Eastern Wonderland, and she is not the youkai who Yukari defeated in the Second Prologue thereof.

I was mildly disappointed not to find a "professor cap" in create.swf, so I had to make do with haxing Shingyoku-M's hat. The process I went through to make Rin's first chart was slightly more complicated than necessary, too. And hooray, I've completely reconciled the differences between the comic's timeline and canon:1 by ripping off Thief of Time!

But none of that matters now, because in honor of comic #100, I now present the shortest comic in the storyline so far! Furthermore, we finally meet the last boss, Meimu! Her fighting style is sort of like a mix between Yukari and Sakuya. Her weather is called Time Storm, and works a lot like Snow (getting hit or blocking drains card-energy), except that instead of losing a card, you regain a card that was previously-used (multiple cards, if a Spell Card was used) in reverse-order of when you used them, as well as undoing damage done to the enemy or abilities changed/upgraded where applicable. I don't have a battle-theme for her yet (she can have Touhou 12.3's usual final-battle-theme for now). Her "pre-battle conversation" theme, however, is titled "Aperture Girl." Another piece of music: "Broken History ~ Time Paradox." If you lose against Meimu in any context, or against Yukari, Meimu, or Rin as either of the other two, or against yourself in Arcade/Versus: instead of the regular continue-screen, you get a Metal Gear Solid 3-type "TIME PARADOX" screen, with that as the music.

I admit Meimu sounds a bit more intelligent than most ten-year-olds ought to be when she's giving Cirno her The Reason You Suck Speech (Warning, link leads to TVTropes. Muffin will not be held responsible for hours of time lost as a result of following it.But see also this disclaimer), but ... um ... maybe I'll come up with something! I don't know, I'm just winging most of it now! (I have the story arc planned, but not the individual comics for the most part.)

Transcript

  1. (Rin Satsuki, Reimu, and Marisa are at the Shrine, with mugs of green tea.)
Rin: Now, let's start from the beginning. There's no "when it all started," since there's too much time travel and quantum ...
    Marisa: Quantum? Yech!
Rin: ... but if there was, it would be when you broke that Stone of the Celestials.
  2. (Metal Gear Solid 3's game over screen, showing PC-98 Reimu and Mima flinching back from an exploding Stone of the Celestials.)
Text: (obscured by the narration text) TIME PARADOX
Rin's Narration: When a powerful human enters heaven as a celestial, they often give up their power and seal it away in a special stone. Even if it’s from just one person, a Stone of the Celestials can have enough power -- it’s the difference between burning a log, and converting its entire mass directly into energy -- that if it were destroyed ...
    Text: Continue/Exit
Rin's Narration: ... the energy released could tear a hole in the space-time continuum -- "shattering" history by severing the connections between one moment and the next.
  3. (Back at the Shrine.)
    Reimu: Nice infodump.
Rin: Oh, I'm just getting started! Anyway, Keine fixed it, but it changed the past and future. Now there's two histories of Gensokyo.
  4. (Rin in front of a sketchy pink background, wearing a professor's cap and using a pointer-stick to indicate a timeline. It is split between an earlier and later time.)
Rin: They are largely the same, but the first major difference is that in the original or "canon" timeline, the Hakurei Border may or may not have been created in A.D. 1885 rather than 1884, shifting Gensokyo's entire history from that point by one year.
Rin: Our history, dubbed the "Nekokayou" timeline, had an entire year inserted between the Geyser Incident and the UFO Incident. Also, there's a lot more romance here.
    Red Text: ZUN
    Early Canon Timeline: 1884/1885?
    Later Canon Timeline: SA/UFO
    Text: (Definitely not to scale)
    Red Text: MUFFIN
Early Nekokayou Timeline: (slightly behind the corresponding canon point) 1884
Later Nekokayou Timeline: (further apart than in canon) SA/UFO
Later Nekokayou Timeline: (pointing shortly after SA) Mokou/Kaguya
Later Nekokayou Timeline: (pointing to UFO) Things happen a bit differently
    Text: Okay, I give up
  5. (The Shrine again.)
Marisa: So what does this have to do with the current Incident?
Rin: A future-version of the perpetrator (who is also from the future) fished me out of non-being and made me into a youkai with Kirin-like powers.
  6. Marisa: (wincing sweatdrop) ... future ... What? Ow!
Reimu: (eyes narrowed sweatdrop) Can you go back to obscure non-answers? That made my brain hurt.
Rin: I think I can make another diagram for that ...
  7. (Rin brings up a diagram with a brief timeline.)
Timeline: Saved Rin/Now/Future/More Future (there is an arrow pointing from "More Future" to "Future" and another one pointing from "Future" to "Now")
Reimu: And so after Dracula got you, you figured out how to restore yourself on your own, got it. What's the new culprit actually *doing*?
Rin: Ah, the *fun* part of the explanation!
  8. (Long panel: Cirno arrives in Meimu's dark stage through an aperture, which closes behind her. Meimu looks up at her.)
    SFX: BEOom
    Cirno: WAUGHPTH!
    Meimu: Ah, right on schedule!
  9. (Cirno rights herself.)
Cirno: Wha -- who are you!? And where'd that giant thing and Okuu go!?
Meimu: (sweatdrop) Aha, I keep forgetting how much you're going to change over the years ...
  10. Cirno: Uh ... what?
Meimu: Oh, allow me to introduce myself! Um ... Welcome to my boundary-world! Uh ... I am Meimu, the mysterious youkai from the future! And I'm here to make sure things ... happen ... the way I want them to!
    SFX: continuing sweatdrop
  11. Cirno: I don't care! Put me back where I was before!
Meimu: Wait a minute, though! Whether or not you're the "strongest," you still aren't as powerful as you can be!
  12. (Meimu floats upward.)
    Cirno: What?
Meimu: Yeah, your wings should've reached the next "stage of power" between now and that flower-incident, but ... I think I need to provoke you.
  13. (Cirno flies above Meimu's level.)
Cirno: Start making sense! I'm the strongest!
Meimu: No, actually, you're not. You're just a stupid fairy with an ego the size of Gensokyo.
  14. Cirno: (angry) WHAT!
Meimu: You only won your previous fights was because Sanae Kotiya used a "miraculous victory" Spell Card without specifying *whose* victory it was, and you didn't give Hong Meiling a chance to defend herself.
  15. Cirno: ("Azumanga" angry-face) You ... you ...!!
Meimu: Maybe you're the strongest *fairy* there is. *Maybe.* But you're still weaker than even a human, and all your opponents will still very easily outwit and curbstomp you, especially with that stupid "Icicle Fall" Spell Card.
  16. (Cirno stops in her ascent, only looking mildly annoyed.)
Cirno: Hey, I haven't actually used Icicle Fall in like months.
Meimu: Oh, so you admit that the rest of ...? Actually, I'll switch tracks.
  17. Meimu: YOUR GIRLFRIEND IS AN EVEN BIGGER NINEBALL THAN YOU ARE!
    Cirno: Wstfgl!
  18. (In a blue "powerup" effect, Cirno's wings become much bigger and icier.)
    Cirno: AAAAAAAA!
    SFX: KER-WING!
    Meimu: There we go!
  19. (Closeup of Meimu.)
Meimu: Now I'll show you that, even powered up, you're no match for the likes of me or Reimu Hakurei or even --
  20. (Cirno murderously looms above Meimu, who blanches. A ghostly spell-card image of her appears, not quite looking the same as she does now.)
Cirno: CIRNO SMASH PUNY TIME-YOUKAI WITH GLACIER-MALLET.
Spell Card: Ice Mass 「Great Crusher」
Meimu: (sweatdrop) ... Oh spoon me.

1Notice how the article header says the Hakurei Border was created in 1884, but the timeline says it was 1885.

I remembered you trying to do something big for number 100... well I think this comic fills the job: Seeing an overpowered smug snake time youkai egg Cirno on more and more to fulfill her means... as it then backfires on her. "Oh Spoon me"

That and I find your Cirno/Okuu pairing adorable.
