The mushroom, Masha, seeing the other mushrooms become frozen, gathered the life force around it to use as self defense in an effort to prevent Cirno from freezing her?
Or
Mushrooms have a communal intelligence and are a hive mind. When the other mushrooms died off their will and intelligence went to the only remaining mushroom, Masha, in an effort to live and survive. Masha, being the only mushroom left and of a combination of all other past shrooms became a youkai?

So the mushroom's influence expanded because of Cirno's shroom carnage?
(I got nothin'.)

>Reimu: Guess that the "soul energy" may have moved to create Masha since the mushrooms might have been connected at one point.
>Aya: Ask how else could it happen, since she was the only untouched mushroom left at that time, that wasn't frozen.
>Nitori: Ask about the mushrooms at Marisa's house now.
>Masha: Wake up from your dream and wonder outside in a daze.
Oh yeah before I forget:
>Daiyousei: Make sure that Cirno and Utsuho don't cause an incident around the lake if need be.

Because mushrooms feed on decay, Masha was able to siphon off the life-force from the others as they died?
I feel like I'm just rearranging stuff here, like... "When you can balance a tack hammer on your head", and all.
Wait, actually... If it's "floating around", then it would have been an ambiant kind of thing in that space, spread between the mushrooms. They'd have been absorbing it equally, keeping in balance, until Cirno disrupted this. (On the other hand, I think other people said basically this, so... shrug.)
> Masha: Find Cirno. "M... m—Mommy?"
> Utsuho: What is this I don't even.

There's also the posibility that all of the mushrooms where feeding on the large life force cloud Nitori speaks about, using it as fuel like Maya said. But once Masha was left alone, she had the life force all for herself without having to share it, thus having enough for her to become a youkai... kind of. It's oposite to Aya since life force was there all the time and it's not from the other mushrooms, and links a little with Masha's dream.

At this point, I'm betting that when Cirno froze the other mushrooms, the life force they had gathered was freed, and perhaps due to their closeness to Masha it was all immediately absorbed by her. In other words, not only was she free to absorb the remaining life force in the area, but the life force that all the other mushrooms had absorbed too. Explains the dream as well. The mushrooms died, and Masha absorbed their life force.
VIVI
oh...
suddenly remembered something fun about kinokos.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fairy_ring nice, nee? all that mushrooms born from the spores of the center mushroom. After that, the old mushroom died (they no live too mush) and form this pretty thing. Our Fly Agaric Amanita Masha is one of the kind of mushrooms who can do that.Maybe was a mechanism in reverse; the live force from the center mushroom (her) "return to the origin" after Cirno freezed the other mushrooms...making who Masha turn into youkai.

"Mushrooms are not individual organisms. Rather, they are just one part of the mycelia lurking beneath the ground." This follows kinda what VIVI said... let's just consider the center mushroom to be the master 'shroom in this case and it connects with surrounding mushrooms via mycelia.
Evidence to be presented concerning what the heck happened:
1) Back while Cirno was in the forest and before trying to eat explosive stuff, the general shape of the cluster was a circle, so we do in fact have a fairy circle. The mushroom destined to be Masha could be described as in the middle of the cluster, making her the master mushroom. When Cirno froze just about every other 'shroom there, the middle was somehow unaffected. Based on Aya's comment being backwards, it is evident that this mushroom absorbed the surrounding life force to shield it form harm. But that doesn't seem to be the only explanation for the 'shroom's power up...
2) Masha's Dream: We can see easily enough that Masha lies in the center. She and the other mushrooms appear to have a grey background to them (the life force), and as each mushroom is iced, the circle behind Masha gets bigger! As each mushroom was iced and their life force needed to be rerouted, it gathered at the center 'shroom. So the buildup of life force from each of these magical mushrooms must have also contributed to the total life force necessary to fuel an extensive spore distribution and turn the 'shroom into a youkai.
..it might also follow from this that the 'shrooms Marisa is boiling are magically impotent now...

Player Three: My God, I was right? Masha sapped the life force from the other mushrooms?
Fly agaric sappin mah life dispenser!
(I have nothing constructive to add at this point.)

Spores influence people in the forest through interaction with foreign spirits. Spores gather enough life force, either from the people they influence or from the spirits giving orders (us). Then, when that last barrier goes up and blocks off all of Gensoukyou, the spores become unable to spread further. The life force, having nowhere else to go, travels back from the spores into the mushroom that created them.
Of course, there are a few holes in this theory:
1) Doesn't address if or how Cirno's freezing of the other mushrooms affects this process.
2) Doesn't adequately explain why the spores are draining life energy.
3) Doesn't tell us why the life energy travels back to the parent mushroom instead of staying in the spores.
