DiMastine

Hmm. is this the original hell raven in the past view again without sepia or is something attacking Okuu?

Wolf

Should we worry on what happened here.... maybe. Should we worry about what will happen to Cirno... no not really. Since Cirno is Teh Strongest so she can handle Utsuho if things happen to come up as a wost case senario here.

Dizzy H. Slightly Voided

Well, examine the panel more closely. :3

Sect

Wait, is that the Earth in the sky there?

Inkerius

Ah, I get it. Title, old-fashioned-looking Okuu, Earth in the sky... So that's when this is.

AJS

DAMMIT YUKARI!!! Always messing with us.......
*looks back at panel*
WHAT DOES IT MEAAANNNNN?!?!!?!!??!

DiMastine

This is back when Yukari led a demon army against the moon then?

Kaiser

@AJS: I don't know for sure but seeing that Utsuho(or perhaps her look-alike) is looking like she is having WARNING nuclear meltdown followed shortly by the screen going on the fritz, I assuming that we should not be near her. Just of our own safety.
>Cirno: Blindly fly into Utsuho for cuddles. Even if you are blown up in the process. It will be AWESOME;)

Tewi Inonymous

More temporal shenanigans?

Player Three

This is...a flashback of the Lunar Invasion that Yukari led. She knew they'd lose. And Utsuho's predecessor seems to be cursing her for it.

But why? Why are we seeing this?

...I have a bad feeling about this.

Player Three

...And I just figured a connection. Utsuho is currently...

Oh, this is not good.

Spirit Tsunami

Yeah, that's definitely our mysterious predecessor. I just wish I knew her name.

sRc

oh "DAMMIT YUKARI" indeed. I should have suspected something like this from the warning signs...

Enlong

"Just wish I knew her name."

The Yatagarasu, perhaps?

Or is this someone completely different?

I admit I wouldn't be able to tell the difference between a hell-raven and a crow-god if money was riding on it...

MrChips

Hmm, I wonder if this means that Past-Eirin will make a special guest appearance?

I'm not too sure as to just when Yukari attacked the moon, so grah.

DiMastine

I'd have to look it up on the wiki but I'm pretty sure the lunar invasion happened before the creation of the Hakurei border.

Kitsune Inari

Hmm... if it's a flashback, shouldn't it be red-shifted due to doppler effect? (since, you know, past is getting away from present and all that)

MWchase

The sepia wrapped around, maybe? It's hardly the least ridiculous thing it's done.

(Maybe the sepia is also on a sixty year cycle?)

sRc

@DiMastine, MrChips:

the first invasion of the moon was ~1000 years or so before the border was erected

BigB

This is probably how the sun-goddess who Utsuho ate to gain nuclear powers died. Yukari probably killed her. or she tricked her and got her killed.

Project_Mars

Looks more like an invisible full moon than the earth to me.

Enlong

No, it's definitely Earth. Viewed at the right angle, you can distinctly see blue ocean and green continents.

Beta Maxis

You just LOOOOOVE stringing us along with little future tidbits don't ya Muffin? And you do it so WELL...

The Blue Jelly

Uh, guys, the command was in *orange*. It's the Yatagarasu...

CapedLuigisYoshi

...Well, that change makes things more obvious...

Dizzy H. Slightly Voided

Yeah, I figured that if the Earth was gibbous, there's no way it'd be daytime on that side of the moon ... ;)

Wolf

So does this mean our viewfinder is acting up to were it jumps from past to present to future in any given order as of now?

sRc

okay, so I get that the title's supposed to be red on the front page for some mysterious reason, probably, but any reason it keeps switching back and forth from red to orange and back today KM?

MWchase

I think it's a matter of visited coloring or not. The bulk of the title is switching from orange to red, which is distracting (me, at least) from the subtler change of typical orange to other typical orange.

Dizzy H. Slightly Voided

Yeah, it has slightly different colors depending on whether it's by itself, part of a link you haven't clicked on, or part of a link you haven't clicked on. And individual "link to someone's comment" links are marked "visited" or not separately from the main link.

It might also have something to do with the fact that up until last night or so, I'd been fiddling with the CSS files practically since I made the page.

sRc

yah I figured you had separate CSS settings for the active/visited link colors for this particular page, but when they kept switching I began to wonder if it was freaking out and not loading them anymore or something

Arcc

Wait, I *know* that panel wasn't in space last time I looked. Dammit, Yuffin!

Arcc

. . . Uh. Nevermind. Either I got gapped or I'm going slightly insane.

xaekin

That was what looked weird with the image. I could tell it was on the moon, but it would be night on the moon, and in any case, the sky isn't opaque from the moon. Or at least it never looks that way. It should be dark to pitch black. I prefer dark, but that's aesthetics. Oh, by the way, awesome comic, muffin.

Sect

Okay, now I KNOW that the sky wasn't dark and the Earth wasn't that visible when I first saw this comic...

Eletale

Wait a minute... Are you telling me there's actually a plot?

Dizzy H. Slightly Voided

Notice how it has a modified-time. And how I made a comment above. :P

Arcc

I knew it! I will henceforth call you Yuffin whenever something like this happens.

MWchase

I figure I might as well note the piddling investigation I did just now:

This character may be referred to as "Asky" (I think...). My by-now poor memories of my Japanese culture class, as well as my highly limited knowledge of Touhou canon, mean that I have no idea what that could be short for. (The "unvisited" color doesn't seem to match that of the Yatagarasu in In Possession Of Your Faculties, so that's one avenue off, probably.) Extrapolating from Chinese mythology, I'd guess that there are up to 9 (or possibly 10) hell-ravens or similar beings that have consumed corpses of three-legged crows, two of those being Asky and Okuu.

Okay, that's enough Wikipedia. (Random design question: how many people click the "Reset" button down here? How many do it intentionally?)

Dizzy H. Slightly Voided

You've, uh, certainly done a whole lot research than I ever did.

MWchase

Aside from poking around in the CSS files and comparing colors, everything in that comment was based on stuff linked to from In Possession Of Your Faculties. Two pages. Two of them. Quite simply, if you can't find it in your plans, or the character links at the bottom, it's guesswork.

(The Wikipedia article offers rather more Touhou-related detail than I expected, though I guess it's not much, in the grand scheme of things.)

Dizzy H. Slightly Voided

Ah, k. I actually forgot that "asky" is what I named the CSS-class, since I had to fudge things a bit ... :3

Kaiser

Okay now I understand what is going on. I'm pretty sure that there will be no snuggles with Cirno.

@KM: By the way how many times did you have to edit this strip?

Dizzy H. Slightly Voided

This page itself? Once. :o

MWchase

Wait... "asky"... "A Sky". Ffff, how did I not notice this a day and a half ago?

I was going to draw further conclusions from this, but I rechecked the Touhou wiki, and it turns out my speculation gets deep-sixed by name order. Now, my only conclusion is that I have thoroughly confused myself.

Arcc

Touhou wiki? That won't save you here. We need a Nekokayou wiki.

MWchase

I was hitting it up for basic background information. The hierarchy of information I'm assuming is, for these purposes, Muffin canon trumps Touhou canon trumps historical record. Unless Muffin changed the intended name order as it applies to Okuu, the speculation I was going to lay out simply doesn't work.

(For the record, "asky" -> "A Sky" -> "kuu" -> "Utsuho". But that's her given name, so I'm barking up a tree in the wrong forest. Unless maybe it's some sort of traditional family name thing. Would/Does that happen?)

The one guess I'm pretty sure about is that there are a total of 9 dead three-legged crows, two of which we've seen to have been eaten. (There could be 10, but I'm pretty sure that would lead to the end of all life on earth so... probably not.)

Incidentally, for this comment, those numbers, that order—BANNED

So yeah, I'm doing my best to spin a lot from a little. I'm not sure a dedicated Nekokayou wiki would help all that much, because it's not like everything is just going to be a continual rearrangement solely of established concepts. Just not sufficient for purposes of fannish extrapolation. (Of course, with the original MSPA, it's worse, because many references are retroactive, and therefore not foreshadowed at all. I don't have as good a feel for CSA's reference speed chess factor.)

Dizzy H. Slightly Voided

Where is "there are nine of 'em" from? :o

And for the record, "asky" comes from the fact that you can't put numbers in the names of CSS-classes (or maybe just at the beginning), and I didn't want anything longer than four letters. :3

MWchase

From the fact that, in Chinese legend, there were originally ten three-legged crows, and all but one of them were killed when they went rogue and put every sun in the sky at once (which was a Bad Thing). I am assuming, therefore, that there is still one such crow alive, to prevent the world from being plunged into eternal night. (I'm applying Chinese myth because "Ten Evil Suns" is apparently a reference to this.)

I mean, by lack of a sun. People have ways to go about these things.

Point is, it's either nine or ten, and I'm leaning towards nine.

Numbers... damn. I wish I could see something in that to go off half-cocked about, but for the moment, it just seems... mysterious. (For the record, no more shenanigans of the type I struck out above. When I did that, I hit my personal quota on those. Forever. Just so you know.)

sRc

MW, you're thinking WAY more into this than KM is ;)
