2010/09/24: Since everyone ignored the main message in favor of the "preview" thing

Created:

Always use secure-HTTP / Unsecure HTTP / Permanent Link

... I'm just going to include ONLY the main body of the previous note here.

Okay, this has become a bit troublesome. Over the course of the site's history, a number of people have been posting in the comments using fake-but-valid email addresses (i.e. asdfghjkl@lol.cat) and causing trouble. (If you haven't seen it, it's because I already deleted the posts.) This makes it problematic to either ban them by email address, since they could just put asdfghjkm@lol.cat, or to communicate with them if they aren't simply being idiotic trolls. They say an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, and I have to admit, "physically" preventing people from using fake email addresses is, indeed, sixteen times better than trying to stomp on each fake-email that comes up.

(Now, I'm aware that if you've been using fake-but-valid email addresses and not causing trouble, this may be unfair to you, but speaking as the guy who owns this site, doing that kinda makes me ... uneasy, so that I can't directly communicate with you for any reason, including positive ones, nor reliably ban someone by email should they start causing trouble. I understand if you're concerned about privacy; I promise you that I'm going to be the only one who sees your email address, and even then I usually skim over the comments and don't actually pay attention to what the email address is. If you're worried about third parties getting at it, I recommend using the "Secure HTTP" links which can be found at the top of every page. And if you don't trust me, I'm going to be that much less certain that I can trust you. Simple as that.)

Bottom line: I am setting up a system for validating email addresses by sending an actual email to the address with a "click to prove this is a real email address" link, and I will implement it tomorrow evening if all goes well. You will only need to validate it once, unless you change your email address or username.

Just a test. Is this thing on?

If yes, then I'm sorry to learn that even you are trolled.

DarkNeoSonic

I'm sorry to hear that you are trolled.
Your comics are awesome, and trolls have no place here.
So, I hope all goes well, and that you keep up the good work.

CapedLuigisYoshi

Oddly, I barely noticed the "preview comments" part.

...Just noticed "tommorrow evening". B'duh, so that's why I didn't get a confirmation e-mail...

ugh some people...
luv your comics btw

Player Three

Hey, I didn't ignore the validation part. I just didn't have much to say on it (namely, that it wouldn't bother me). I use an actual e-mail as it is.

In any case, let's see how this validation bit works.

Wolf

Well it was bound to happen sooner or later I guess. It's really a shame that it even happened at all. Well hopefully this will prevent anymore trolling then.

So good luck with the e-mail validation from here on out now.

Kaynato

E-mail validation usually works, but some people will still make duplicate email addresses, etc. to avoid bans. In that case, would an ip-ban work?

Dizzy H. Slightly Voided

Got an IP-ban system already. This requires them to take two time-consuming-ish steps in order to bandodge.

Duran

No problem for me; I just didn't have anything to comment on before hand.

Solarn

I don't really care. It's not like the e-mail validation thing will consume so much of my time that I won't be able to comment. That's why I didn't comment on it. It's there, it's good, maybe you'll have less trolls now.

The Ace of Scarabs

Let me test this out. I don't troll very much, lol, because I have better things to do with my bandwidth.
